^Thanks, Wiggirl. Maybe the teachers were just glad to see two "enemies" agree on something.

Well they did have other kids compete, it's just that Alan and Kristy were the first pair. I didn't really like that bit. I wish he would have won. I have a feeling he would have been nicer to Kristy than she was to him. After all, he did like her enough to take her to the school dance in Phantom Phone Calls.
The part that always makes me stop and say "Wait, what?" in this book is Becca's bathing suit that she colored with markers. Were they fabric markers? If not, wouldn't they wash out in the sprinkler, or at least fade? In what universe is a plain white suit less expensive than a colorful one? I know it's been discussed in the thread, but it's so weird I think it deserves another mention.

^ Yeah, I get what you mean about the bathing-suit-cost thing. I don't think the cost of a suit is dependent on it's colour. Wouldn't there be other variables like fabric or style?

solid suits in different colors would probably all cost the same, but it wouldn't be uncommon for a plain suit to be cheaper than a suit with a design on it. and i'm sure becca was drawing designs, not filling the suit in completely to make it a new color.
sorry, i accidentally hit submit halfway through.

Okay, I’m stunned…I really like this book. I’ve only read it a couple of times before, and I was cracking up at so many things. Like Stacey and Kristy “swimming” on the rug before a BSC meeting and Jessi saying Kristy looked like a turtle. Claudia’s crazy outfit during the backwards race. Jessi’s simple “I felt ill” before her event. The Kristy/Alan race was fun to read.
Weird that Jessi wonders if she and Elise will “end up” being friends, I think after all that practice time together they’re already friends! I liked her; she was sweet and shared Jessi’s sense of humor, too bad she is never mentioned again.
I liked the mini-Olympics, there were some funny/cute moments, like when Jordan tries to drink yeast in water or Andrew winning “Most Determined"...it’s too bad I never read this book when I was younger ;D Nice summer read.

^ Maybe Elise was a friend like the people you share a cabin with at summer camp are friends? You're thrown into an unusual situation which bonds you pretty quickly, but once you're back in the real world, things tend to fade. Like "The Bachelor."

Some randoms happened in this book. In particular, Kristy and Alan's race and Mal's sprained ankle. Were they both really needed in the plot? I thought this race was stupid and ridiculous to be honest, and I really doubt the entire school and the administration would get into it that much. Kristy may be competent, but I wouldn't want to watch the class clown race the shortest girl in the grade despite it sounding a bit amusing.
The Mini Olympics wasn't very exciting. I think every kid had their own version growing up. I grew up with a backyard underground pool, which are even popular in Canada, and we used to make up our own Mini Olympics in the pool with our neighbours.
Also, I noticed there's a lot of sports related books in the '50s.

We had an aboveground pool at my house growing up, and reading this thread made me remember the time my cousin and I tried putting together a synchronized swimming routine and insisting that my mom stand outside and watch. I'd totally forgotten about that until now!

LS #29 is also at this point, and it was 1992 when the Barcelona and Albertville Olympics were taking place.

How typical of BSC-world, that Jessi wins!

At least the book showed that Jessi and Elise were the only team practicing outside of class time. Would have been a lot more unbelievable if the other teams were practicing just as much and Jessi still won because of her natural ability.

That's a good point, Scrounge.

I think that is a good point too, and it makes the book totally plausible in my mind. I think it's sweet that they assume they must be the worst ones because nobody else is practicing as often as they are, when in reality it's all that extra practicing that helped them win. I am super unathletic so I would have assumed the same in that situation.

And this has already been touched on but Jessi being a professional ballerina does lend itself well to sync-swimming as she's naturally graceful and athletic. I'm liking all of these positive outlooks on the book, it's making me like it better now, haha!

Well, a trained ballerina, anyway!
