I also would have liked to read about more correspondence between Will and Claudia. The only thing we got to see was at the end of SS #2 when they exchanged a few letters. I guess we were supposed to assume there were more letters between them at some point. Otherwise, why would Claudia even think of him and feel guilty in this book if they hadn't still been communicating?

I just finished "Mary Anne vs. Logan." At a BSC Meeting starting on Page 79, the girls reminisce about vacation boyfriends. Claudia says, "Well, I fell in love with Will at camp, and then we had to leave each other when camp was over." There is no mention of them exchanging phone calls or letters.

^ Saying they had to leave each other doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't write or call. Maybe Claudia just meant that the "real" part of her relationship with Will was done, even if she didn't know it at the time?

^That's true. Maybe Claudia really meant that part of her relationship with Will that would be shared with us was long over!

Did anyone else notice in the last page of the book, where the book titles are listed, it says Book 33 is Claudia and the Mystery of Stoneybrook and Book 35 is Stacey and the New Kids on the Block. They were forecast to come out April 1990 and June 1990 respectively. I heard about Stacey and the New Kids on the Block from this board, but I didn't know that Mystery of Stoneybrook was originally planned as a Claudia book.
Maybe Scholastic should have noticed this marketing error beforehand... it just seems kind of bad on their part to have books advertised that don't come out as planned.
Also, I know NKOTB isn't a good title because kids would mistake it for the popular music band at the time but I wonder what it could have been about...

I think was basically supposed to be Claudia and the Terrible Truth.

^ Nice. They should have done it. I like those ideas better than Great Search, which was a terrible book IMO and Mystery of Stoneybrook was blah.
Anyway, back onto the book. I read it yesterday (on Christmas!) I don't know, this book is kind of weird on Ann's part. Does she think that's really what tween girls are like? Mary Anne especially, and don't get me started on Jessi. She even says that she needs to do well because there is a few people in the school she "has to impress". And Claudia gazing at Guy's lips and thinking what it would be like to kiss them passionately... it just seems like Ann was mushy when writing this book, or needed to pick up a romance novel or something.
I liked the Winter War idea. Something that bothered me is all of the repetition in this book. I get that we want to see different sitters' perceptions, but I found that a lot of the book was repeating them "getting up in the morning" or "eating". Did anyone else notice that, more so than other Super Specials?
How many times do they need to put on a talent show? Ugh.
Overall, I thought this book was "meh" this time around. I started skimming through a lot in the end. It could have been done much better, IMO.

I thought Jessi felt like she needed to impress people because she was still relatively new to SMS and of the only black students.

^ I agree. It reminds me of Jessi's Horrible Prank where some of her classmates wouldn't come to her Follies meeting at her house because she was black. I always assumed that she was trying to impress *those people*

I feel like this ss really made all of the least attractive qualities of each sitter stand out for me.
Kristie: bossy and way too competitive Ma: annoyingly obsessed with someone else Claudia: omg a boy loves me Stacey; boy crazy and in love after he said hello Mal: afraid to do anything outside her comfort zone but annoyingly spying Jessi: everyone hates me b/c I'm black
It was actually really nice to see Claudia excel at something other than art!
In Stacey's first chapter when she meets Pierre, she says no other boy mattered. How sad for that Toby guy and whoever else she had dated.
On pg 170 I think I am missing some lines! Right after mal mm

i can see where stacey is coming from though, when suddenly a new crush completely takes over her head. i think all the girls went through that same feeling at some point -- "yeah i liked that other guy, but i never felt like THIS before." i know claudia said it word for word, comparing a new boy (don't remember which one) to plain old trevor.

ETA: I finished this last night. I did have the thought that between #13 (Logan Likes Mary Anne) and this book, other than his appearances in "Bad-Luck Mystery," and "Search for Tigger," Logan is pretty much absent from most books. Here all of a sudden, MA is desperately pining for him! Unless, all this time, there was more between them than we were told, this drastic change (in them both, I had forgotten about Logan's phone call), really came out of no where! Dawn was sure MA-like in the way she snapped seconds after she had intruded on MA who was lost in a Logan-induced fog. "As Mimi said, no one deserves rude." This is one tenny instance where I could see MA needing a moment or two to "get" what Dawn was saying/needing. Dawn just pounced, which naturally led MA to taking the bait and doing the same. Yet one book later, they are thrilled to become step-sisters. I did enjoy the MA scene with Ms. Halliday! I know their chat was a one-time, being in the right place moment, but it would have been nice had they at least said "hi" to one another in passing at SMS. Maybe it was just so nice to see MA do something besides nag at Dawn, harp on everyone else to agree with Dawn, or cry. It is too bad we never got to read any of her finished "report." It sounded awfully incomplete to me. It was very sweet how Guy introduced his family to Claudia. I did like how Kristy seemed to bond pretty quick with Bryce and Ginnie. Otherwise, this wasn't the best of super specials (to me). Stacey's idea that they be snowbound might have held more potential. I did just check and the Red Team was supposed to be Claudia, Mal, and Jessi. On the cover it looks like "Claud" is more MA and the other side has the others. Although the non Jessi or Mal person is wearing a red jacket so lol maybe the ghost-writer remembered there was a third person on this team but not quite who so he made their coat the right color.

I'm fan of New Kids On The Block. I wouldn't catch on, if I saw the title in the back of the book, the first time. Maybe, it's about a missing band member of NKOTB. Stacey helps find one of NKOTB who went missing. ;D
