I actually can't see Ann liking them a whole lot, at least not on the level of her love for WIZARD OF OZ.

^ Oooh, I could totally see Mary Anne as Dorothy and Tigger as being Toto.

^ ;D Totally see that too. Agree that I can't see Ann liking the Lord of the Rings, which is why I assume she didn't use them. I just reread Secret Language and thought the part where Karen signed "I love you" to Claudia was really sweet. I always enjoy reading about the BSC (other than Kristy) sitting for Karen and Andrew, especially at the little house. Actually, I really like reading about any interaction between the sitters and another girl's family members.

^I liked that part too. Was that when Karen wanted to make ghost pate?

^ That was the one ;D For some reason, I especially like Claudia's interaction with the Thomas-Brewer kids. Did she ever do much with David Michael?

Thinking it over, AMM seemed to like mainly realistic fiction.
Karen was considerably less annoying in the earlier books...I think Claudia must have sat for Jeff in 'The Ghost at Dawn's House' or something and I was kind of sad because we didn't get to see much of their interaction.

I never read the Little Sister series so my opinions are strictly based on the BSC books. I personally find Karen pretty hateable. She was just so spoiled and got away with so much! Re-reading the books I've discovered just how annoying she was, although I didn't like her even back when I first read the books. I felt sorry for Andrew for having to put up with her. No wonder he was so shy. I actually liked Andrew. I think I kind of pitied him, really.

ann liked cs lewis and wizard of oz a lot though, so i don't know if it's necessarily that she just liked realistic fiction. i could personally never get through lord of the rings; i find it all terribly boring. but i looove the wizard of oz series.

^ I'm not a big fan of Lord of the Rings (or anything even remotely like that, actually). I've never read Wizard of Oz, though. Are there actual books? I feel dumb but I didn't realize there was anything other than a movie. ;D

I cannot stand Karen!!!! Ever!!!! Andrew seemed really sweet though, like in one LS book he makes an obstacle course for Emily Junior for Karens' present. How sweet is that?

^ I remember that book about Andrew. He can be pretty sweet (and pretty awful like in Karen's Tattletale....) I do love Karen and Andrew's relationship and both their relationships with Seth in the LS books.

I actually haven't read a lot of books about Karen and Andrew, but I actually liked Karen when I did read about her (actually, my main impression of her is from Kristy's Great Idea- maybe she changed later). I personally got a kick out of her "Morbidda Destiny" fears. She seemed to be very amusing and quite a character, and it's fun to read about her. She may even be one of my favorites so far. Maybe I can sort of relate to her as I have quite an imagination myself. ;D
As for Andrew, I don't know enough about him to make a decent opinion, but he seems like a sweet enough kid. He's just not as nearly as fun to read about as Karen!
Aln, I'm not a big fan of Lord of the Rings either, and most fantasy things like that. It seems like a lot of people are, though. My mom loves fantasy and keeps trying to get me into stuff like that, but I'm just not interested. Generally speaking, I prefer reading about realistic situations and people, especially about topics that better help me understand life and the real world. (But, of course, the BSC is a bit like a fantasy in itself- good for a "realistic-like escape" every so often ;D ).

She does come across as quite and selfish in the BSC books. Actually, I tend to find all the characters more likeable in their own books (not just Karen) ;D

^ That's how I am too. I also have to keep an open mind to form my own opinions instead of just looking at the books with a preconceived notion (like I used to do with the popular opinion of Karen's an awful child, Kristy's too tyrannical, etc.).

Agreed that most of the characters are more likeable in their own books. Funnily enough (or perhaps expectedly?), rereading the books I am finding a lot of my old childhood opinions are changing. I'm liking Stacey more than I used to, and Mallory less. I think I'm one of the few people who actually considered Mal a favorite when I was younger.
