As a child, I adored Karen. She reminded me of myself (yeah, yeah, not proud of it!). I can't STAND her obsession with ghosts and witches, though. Morbidda Destiny? How on EARTH would a 6 or 7 year old think of that?! I remember reading LS books as a child and not even knowing how to pronounce Morbidda.
Andrew ALWAYS bored me. I think I dislike him even more than Karen. He is going to grow into a really clingy, shy, annoying kid. He seems like such a cry baby. Yeah it'd suck being in Karen's shadow, but Andrew always seemed like such a nerd in training to me.

LOL!
I don't hate Karen as much as everybody else does. I guess because, like you, I liked her when I was a kid! I've always hated her obsession with Ben Brewer and Morbidda Destiny, though. So boring and it seemed like *every* time somebody babysat her, they were dealing with ghosts and crap. YAWN.
She was a brat sometimes, but meh. Most kids are. I loved in Babysitters on Board when she went and got a manicure. I was shocked that Kristy let her go off by herself, though.
As for Andrew.. he's just boring.

Karen did have a bratty side, but I think overall she was a nice little kid. Andrew was sweet in the beginning, but I recently read BSC in the USA - when did he become such a whiney brat?!

hehe I loved when Karen went off in Baby-sitters on Board and got her manicure. That was hilarious. Yeah Kristy was an idiot for allowing a 6 year old to "run back to the room" but it was still funny. I don't think Karen is a bad kid, she's just spoiled and knows she can get away with basically anything she wants to. Who wouldn't take advantage of that?

I really like Karen, especially reading about her in the little sister books. She can be kind of dramatic and bratty but I think this just adds to her "charm" and makes her more interesting. I agree that the Ben Brewer/Morbidda Destiny thing does get a little old. I did like it, though, when she let out the huge scream at Watson and Elizabeth's wedding and then bit her dad's hand when he was trying to shut her up while talking to Mrs. Porter. Naughty but funny anyway. As for Andrew... he seems like a huge whiner. He is always tattling or complaining and getting Karen in trouble - especially in the "little sister" books. I think his mom babies him too and tends to take his side over Karen.

I really like Karen, especially reading about her in the little sister books. Yeah, I like Karen a lot more in the Little Sister books. At least every single one doesn't deal with Morbidda Destiny! Plus, a lot of the illustrations are totally adorable.

Aww, am I the only one who thought Andrew was a cute kid? Couldn't have been easy for him to have such a loud, active, bossy older sister. Then again he seemed really quite withdrawn at times and I guess it's a good thing he had Karen around, she'd probably help him grow out of his shyness.
I totally loved Karen when I was young. I still read those books for entertainment value (I'm such a dork!), and I find her pretty exasperating now. Over on the BSC thread on TWoP someone once compared her to Michelle Tanner -- how she got away with a lot and could do no wrong in the adults' eyes. I think it's a pretty good comparison. Nonetheless, I still like to read about her. Some of my fave Karen books are the early ones in the series, they're just classic -- Karen's Haircut, Karen's Sleepover, Karen's Halloween, etc. I can plow through one of those babies in like 10-15 minutes, maybe less.

I liked Andrew! I thought he was really cute. I also never had any real Karen issues, although she definetely wasn't among my favorites. She lost a lot of my love though when she was so mean to poor Andrew in Karen's worst day, after he got a haircut. The poor little guy (ok, lot of Andrew love going on here), Karen's reaction was totally uncalled for! He had been so nice to her all morning!
On an unrelated note - I really disliked Michelle Tanner. She always annoyed the crap out of me, I loved Stephanie, though.

I know Karen is supposed to be smart for her age and all, having skipped a grade, but it bugs me how she NEVER misspells ANYTHING. But then you've got postcards/letters/diary entries written by Margo Pike, Buddy Barrett, and David Michael, who are all Karen's age or a year older, and they ALL misspell like crazy!

It bugs me how Karen writes in all-caps. For such a little precocious, know-it-all kid, that seems a little... backward. Wouldn't she be more the type to lecture everyone about the proper usage of capital letters?

^It bugs me when ANY of the characters write in all caps. It seems like a lot of them do. In real life, that little habit would have been nipped in the bud as soon as the kid started writing like that in school.

^It certainly would've been in my school, but I assumed that maybe other schools were more relaxed about it? Doesn't seem that way, though.
It was SUCH a common thing for the child characters in these books (oh and many of the male characters, for some reason) to write in all-caps which was so weird. Even if the schools weren't strict about it, that's not how kids are taught to write, so why would so many of them pick up the habit?

i thought andrew was cute, he seemed so shy and sure he whined a lot, but thats what little kids do. i felt sorry for him, karen probably bossed him around so much.
when i used to read the little sister books, i thought karen was so cool, hahhaha. she was so smart and confident and she skipped a grade. now that im older, shes so annoying!! she was so bratty and spoilt and always wanted everything her way. i guess thats what u get when ur father is a millionaire, i dont know.

I read a Times article where they interviewed a lot of people who had skipped a grade, and most of them said that they regret it.

I can't speak for others, but I skipped a grade and never regretted it once. I guess everyone is different. As for Karen, I know she is a brat but when I read the little sister books that just makes her funny. And I think she means well. Sometimes her actions are a little... misguided... but it seems like she usually has good intentions (like trying to be the "best" big sister to Andrew and help him be the "best" in his school play in Karen's Bunny.)
