This is sort of a spin-off from the Perkins girls thread. But did the discrepencies in what 2 year olds could do in the books ever strike anyone as odd?
There is Gabbie who is more coherent than a lot of real 5 year olds. Then there is Marnie Barrett who seems more normal but also Ryan Dewitt, Emily Michelle, Sari Papadakis and Skylar Korman (I think). Emily is described as being language delayed which would be normal considering her background I guess. But what about Marnie, Ryan and Sari?
Gabbie being almost three doesn't make sense really either since Jamie Newton wasn't particularly bright either.
Thoughts?

I think it was an inconsistency. Skylar was only one and a half, I believe, but the others were normal. Gabbie was more advanced than any other two year old I've ever seen. I've seen some that can speak as well as she could, but that's about it.

I've known some kids as young as Gabbie that are that with-it and others that are totally clueless at 5. I guess it just depends on the individual but I don't think Gabbie is that far-fetched - rare maybe but not the only one.

oh god I love Gabbie. She is so adorable. The toddler thing bugs me... they are all so varied. I guess the argument can be made that some of them are barely 2 and others are practically 3, but for the most part, I'd place them all at around 2.5.
I thought Ryan was only like a year and a half? Marnie never does anything, does she? Does she talk? I pity little Marnie. If she's slower than normal, it's her neglectful mother's fault.
Sari was sweet, she seemed like a "normal" 2 year old. I just don't ever recall Ryan/Marnie ever talking. But I think Sari did. Oh and Skylar with her "tat! tat!" thing. haha.

Marnie never does anything, does she? Well, she makes her ham face...

I don't recall Ryan or Marnie ever talking, either. Which is weird, especially in Marnie's case since the Barretts were around quite a bit. Skylar seemed like the most "normal" 2 year old to me. She said simple words and rudimentary sentences. Isn't that about where a 2 year old should be?

Marnie said "no" once. But don't all toddlers?

I think all three Barrett kids were destined to be "slow." Mrs. Barrett just wasn't involved enough.

ITA about the Barretts. None of them seem that bright and i think Mrs. Barrett is one of the worst parents in the series. I have never liked that family!

I remember being vaguely surprised by Mrs. Barrett having served her children eggs for breakfast in Dawn and the Impossible Three. I subconsciously imagined her to be someone who gives her kids a lot of processed foods and takeout.

How old are kids when you can start giving them eggs? I know babies are allergic. When my little cousin was about 9 months, my Grandma gave her a huge helping of scrambled eggs (despite my warnings) and kept saying "she loves those." Well, she loved them until she got extremely ill and puked and puked all over everything. Poor little thing. To this day, I think of that every time I think of eggs. As for Mrs. Barrett, I agree that she doesn't seem the type to make meals for her kids.

I would have thought that a balanced breakfast for Mrs Barrett was a fruit-flavoured Pop Tart with a glass of orange soda.
I know quite a lot of toddlers. Most of them talk a lot more than Marnie and Ryan.

If it's just the egg yolk from a hard boiled egg, then you can give them to a baby who's as young as six months. Or you can mix egg and milk and steam it and get a pudding/custardy-texture thing, and that's fine to give to really young babies as well. It just depends on how the eggs are cooked and whether the individual baby has allergies, I think. If Marnie wasn't allergic to eggs, then she probably would've been fine eating scrambled eggs.
