I just reread MA and the Great Romance and I think that might be wehre I'm getting the idea that Carolyn hung around with Vanessa, Hayley and Charlotte while Marilyn didn't have many friends. That is basically the subplot of that one. As for that book, I usually don't like Arnold subplots but enjoyed the girls in this one. I always like books that show their indivual personalities coming out (unless they have Carolyn's weird science-fiction stuff involved).

That's cute that Carolyn, Vanessa, Haley, and Charlotte are all friends. I love reading about the clients when they're in their little groups of friends. Like Jeff Schafer and the triplets, or Charlotte and Becca.
Marilyn and Carolyn are weird to me because it seems like Carolyn has so many more defining traits than Marilyn does. Like, Carolyn has her science obsession and her room is overflowing with cat stuff and she has a mullet, but what are Marilyn's unique qualities? She plays piano, right? And is just sort of known as the more reserved one?
I felt bad for Marilyn when she made up Gozzie Kunka and Carolyn wasn't hanging out with her very much. I've always been the quieter one out of Kristen and I, and while I never made up an imaginary friend because of it, I could still empathize with Marilyn somewhat.

Mullets, ewww.
Yeah, piano was all I associated with Marilyn, too. That and her new room was smaller than Carolyn's and she decorated it in light, bright colors - yellow I think. I thought Carolyn was the cooler twin when I was younger but when I read about them now I like hearing about Marilyn since I can relate to her character more...the introverted, musical type. I felt bad for her too when she was talking about Gozzie Kunka (great name!)

I never really thought about Marilyn having to make up a friend. That is kinda sad.

It's funny that Charlotte would be friends with Carolyn and Haley - they seem really obnoxious and not the kind of kid Charlotte would want to be friends with. I would think that Marilyn could've been friends with Charlotte and Becca.

^ I never thought about that, but you're right. I would have seen Marilyn and Charlotte and Becca as a better match, too. That would have made an interesting story - Carolyn, Hayley and Vanessa against those three. The louder, more outgoing against the quiet, more reserved. But I guess Charlotte is friends with Hayley and Carolyn because opposites attract??? Also, Charlotte does seem kind of concerned with popularity. But I suppose that is something for the Charlotte thread. As for the Arnolds, I also feel really bad for Marilyn and prefer her to Carolyn.

I never really thought of Vanessa as the outgoing type, actually. She's a book-loving poet but I guess she might be. I agree about Carolyn-Charlotte being a strange match. I always thought so. I think Marilyn and Charlotte could be good friends

^ I guess I have always thought of Vanessa as being a little bolder and not as shy as Charlotte. Maybe because she is a Pike and they have to be like that a little to get noticed "Not shy" might be a better description than outgoing.

I had to laugh at the description of Mrs. Arnold’s outfit in Trouble With Twins and how she was wearing lots of bows. I am still having trouble picturing this but it sounds very interesting. Another point about Mrs. Arnold, though, is I love the description (can’t remember what book now) of her house at Christmastime. She didn’t seem nearly as extreme in later books as in Trouble with Twins – not like Mrs. P who stayed “interesting” (for lack of a better word ;D) through the whole series. Maybe this means that Mrs. Arnold lost any actual “character” she had, though. Also about the Arnold twins - found a reference to one of Marilyn's friends in Surfer Ghost when Margo invites her over. Too bad there wasn't more interaction between these two.

There's sometimes inconsistencies (I know, shocking!) when it comes to the twins' personalities. For instance, I always considered Carolyn to be more outgoing than Marilyn, but in "Kristy and the Missing Fortune," Marilyn's described as the outgoing twin. This has happened in a few different books, too.
I think this is why I'm not a huge fan of the Arnold twins. They don't really have personalities, and even though they try to be different, they still seem pretty similar. The inconsistencies between their personalities makes it even worse!
I did like one of their sub-plots, though. I liked the one where they get too scared by the scary movies, and they end up making a "horror" movie with Kristy. It was pretty cute.

I always thought of Carolyn as more outgoing as well, I mean considering Marilyn had to invent friends and all.

I'm surprised that there are so many who don't like the Arnolds....their sitting subplots were some of the only ones I really looked forward to reading!

I didn't dislike them at all. I guess I'm pretty neutral when it comes to them, I don't think much of them either way really.

Ann definitely stereotyped the Arnold twins when they start dressing differently. Like having the cool outgoing twin and the more conservative less sociable twin. That's why I always picture Marilyn and Carolyn as the Olsen twins as they often played those stereotypes too!
