Just like in Dawn's Big Move, when the Run for Your Money festival is held and they're concerned about the Nannie/Emily seperation anxiety if they're placed on different teams. Uh, shouldn't a child be more attached to her mother? It certainly sounds as if Nannie's role extended far beyond a convenient childcare arrangement. Nannie seemed to be Emily's mother, not Elizabeth.

I agree about Nannie and Emily. Maybe this is why it reminds me of my cousin and my grandma's relationship. My cousin has always bonded more with my grandma (not because of anything my aunt has done, though. In that situation it is because the child knows how to play grandma to get grandma on her side.)

Wow, so a lot of the Watson hate stems from the LS series? That's what it sounds like. And the dysfunctional Nannie-Emily Michelle thing... I mean, just from the regular series, the Thomas-Brewer clan seemed quite content and happy. I'd never actually thought of the issues mentioned until I read this thread, though.
The thing that's bugging me the most has been mentioned by a couple of people here already: If Elizabeth was so desperate in the beginning when the only housekeeper she could afford was one who didn't bother showing up half the time, and she had to rely on her kids (when Charlie was what, 10 years old?) to keep the house running by doing the laundry and vacuuming etc, WHERE WAS NANNIE?! Did she not exist? How come she is available now to look after one toddler in a mansion, but she couldn't help out her daughter back when she *really* needed her?

This will forever be a mystery.
Only thing I can think of is perhaps she was that she hadn't retired when Patrick first walked out. I don't remember the reference, but I had a feeling Elizabeth was 37 (I could be way off, though). If Nannie had Elizabeth in her early 20s, then she would only be in her late 50s at the time the BSC was set. When Patrick first walked out, Nannie would only have been in her early 50s, which seems kind of young to be a widowed lonely grandmother who needs her daughter's family for company. It wouldn't have killed her to make the occasional appearance, but I guess it's plausible that she was still working full time.

You're right. Kristy says she's "37 or something." So by the time she was 24, she was raising 3 kids (having Charlie at 20). Did she go to college? I can't remember, but she seemed to have a pretty good career. (That's where Kristy gets her business sense from, right?) Gotta admire her for that. But I always figured she started it when the kids were a little older. How did they even afford the house when they were that young? Was she working already? What did Patrick do? They had the Bradford Court house at least since Kristy was born. It's kind of hard to save up money with 3 young children. How on earth did she do it?

Well, it was good enough to solely support herself and her four kids, because according to Kristy's Portrait, Patrick wasn't exactly reliable with child support. Also, in Jessi and the Bad Babysitter, Kristy remarks that her mum said "firing people is the hardest part of the job, but sometimes it has to be done" (words to that effect!), so obviously she's in a managerial position of some sort.
It seems unlikely that she went to college after high school and she didn't have a job until Patrick left (in Kristy's Portrait, she's going to interviews and on her first day, Kristy carries her briefcase to the car). So with no education other than high school and definitely no recent experience, she was able to walk into a job which could fully support five people? And within six yrs she had climbed the corporate ladder enough to start hiring and firing? Maybe her success was based more on what happened under the desk? ;D (Ann the feminist would love that!) - she obviously had a secret to financial success, just "happening" to marry a millionaire and all.

Never thought of this but you're right. Interesting... I think one of the little sister books where Karen goes to Take your Daughter to Work Day says what Elizabeth does. Something with advertising I think. Karen's President also talks about Elizabeth's friend who works with the President. She knows some pretty important people, I guess. Speaking of this, what does Watson do anyway? I assume the answer is "inherited money" since Ben Brewer used to live in the mansion. Kristy and Mr. Mom might have said what his job is now but I can't remember. Does he own a business?

In one book I remember "consulting" in another I remember "insurance." But, he works out of the house.
I've been hesitating to say this. But, although I hated Watson when I was younger (I'm not that fond of him now), I always ignore any physical description and picture him as a hot, older guy. Maybe like how Shaun Cassidy looks today. I guess now that I'm an adult I like to have some sex appeal in there somewhere!

Heehee... The guy who I always imagined as hot was Dawn's dad. He looks pretty good in the illustrations in Dawn's Book. Never imagined Watson as a hottie, though.

Watson on the cover of Kristy and Mr. Mom is exactly how I always pictured him. Gray, balding, and chubby.
Elizabeth was in advertising. In Karen's take your daughter to work day book, Elizabeth's company made a bubble gum commercial and filmed Karen's class for it.

Word on Watson's appearance, sparklymouse. I never pictured him as some middle aged, sexy sugardaddy.
And I agree, jen, that Dawn's dad sounds hot. I imagine him as tanned, blonde and muscular. Tsk, Sharon, what were you thinking? And to top things off, you ended up with Richard!

That's funny, I always thought of Dawn's dad as kind of short and dark haired, which makes NO sense I know. I don't know where that came from. Your description of him sounds much better, if only I could reset my brain.

Have you read Dawn's Book, ktag? There are at least three pictures in there of Dawn's dad, and he's quite the hunk

The portraits are really hard to find. So annoying. I need Claudia's and Abby's. Too bad they didn't make portraits for Mallory and Jessi.
