I've always thought Watson's parents were dead. In Karen's Book (which I just finished reading ;D) Karen says Watson's father died before she was born, but Grandma Brewer was at the hospital to see her granddaughter. I guess she died somewhere along the line as well, or otherwise why wouldn't they mention her? I'll have to read Karen's book now for that mention. I know I'm in the minority because I love Karen but it's possible that the Grandma is the one who is unlikeable and that's why she's not in contact. My dad's parents are absolute jerks and he doesn't want much to do with them (totally understandable after hearing some of the things they've done) but just chooses to stay away from them. He even has the same name as his dad (a real pain a lot of times) but we kind of try to pretend we don't even know them. They actually initiated the "limited contact" thing, though, by totally ignoring me for years (I still don't think they know my name - I've always been the "Kid" even though they only have 5 grandkids. One of my other cousins is "the big one", though, soooo....) Anyway, just realized based on this situation that it's possible that both Watson's parents live in Stoneybrook but they just don't have any contact.

^Well, Karen's Book says that Watson's dad is dead, but it's possible his mother could still live in Stoneybrook. Maybe she doesn't like Elizabeth and that's why they have no contact?

^ Or maybe Elizabeth and Watson don't like her ;D Must be an inconsistency in the book I read or Claud probably just didn't know that Watson's dad had died. An inconsistency wouldn't surprise me.... ;D

^An inconsistency in a BSC book? Impossible! ;D Seriously, Watson pretty much gets along with everybody. I can't see him not talking or being in contact with his parents if they were alive.

^ Actually (again going by my own experiences) my dad is the same way - reminds me a lot of Watson - and just keeps things civil by staying away from his jerk relatives. His dad and mom are both the kind of people who thrive on confrontation, which is one reason he avoids them. But this is just my personal experience and probably not the case here. Would add an interesting dimesion, though. I really like Watson in Walking Disaster, especially the scene where he is congratulating and encouraging the kids. I think it's cool how he umpires at a lot of Krushers games, too.

Watson did seem like a good dad. But, in the ls books, he did not seem to spend that much time with Karen and Andrew while they were at the big house for the weekend. He would either be gardening or going to the movies with Elizabeth while Kristy's was left at home to baby-sit.

Can't Watson be the breadwinner for the both of them or will Elizabeth feel guilty that she is making Watson take care of a whole other family besides his own. That's actually brought up in Kristy's Big Day somewhat. Elizabeth breaks the news to Kristy that they found a buyer for their Bradford Court house, and the new family wants to move in in about a month and Kristy tells Elizabeth to sell the house to someone else because that's cutting it close. Elizabeth says no other family will probably offer them that much and Kristy says "What do you need money for? You're marrying Watson!" And Elizabeth says the house money (or half, since half goes to Patrick) is going into a college fund for her children because she thinks it isn't right to expect Watson to pay for her children to go to college. So I guess that can also be attributed to why she still works too lol.

I think Watson is a good father to Kristy and her brothers but it seems that Karen and Andrew got screwed over in the father department. I like how Watson was generous to Kristy by allowing her friends to join in on the vacations.

IMO he was portrayed as almost 'too perfect' but that could have been to compensate for the backstory of Kristy's real dad walking out on them like that. It was like once Kristy got over her initial resentment of her mom dating him, everything was peaches and roses with the blending of the two families.

One of my favorite scenes with him is when he gives Kristy his grandmothers pin. He calls her his daughter and all that sweet stuff.

He's cool but there were moments in LS where I found myself peeved at him..like when Karen was punished for wanting quality time with her friends alone, being pushy to get her to visit Hannie in Karen's Haircut and also calling her greedy/spoiled in Karen's Birthday instead of trying to find out what was on her mind in a heart to heart talk.

I think they changed their minds after being married a while on college tuition, though, Charlie mentions in, I think a friends forever book? that Watson would help him financially there. (Which seems fair, tbh, the guys a millionaire, and you can't exactly wave off Emily Michelle, Karen and Andrew to a full free ride and let the Thomases go into debt.

Watson does have good moments. He makes a real effort to be a father to Elizabeth's children, especially Kristy. Which is really nice, considering how hostile she was to him at first. I think in Kristy and the Mother's Day Surprise, after they adopt Emily Michelle, he refers to Karen AND Kristy as his daughters. Then there's the infamous heirloom pin he gives Kristy that makes Karen jealous. He really wanted Kristy to feel part of his family.
It was a different dynamic in the Little Sister books I guess. Everyone knows I can't stand Karen and it felt like in the LS books he was always spoiling and indulging her and buying her love with toys and ponies. Then again, he can definitely afford to indulge her!
