I bet Janine would really like Lynne Truss.

Janine seems like a total b*tch at times. Yes she is endlessly patient to Claudia and the BSC but Janine doesn't need to correct people constantly or talk big like she does. Sometimes it seems like Janine is purposely showing off how smart she is. Also there are times when Janine is reclusive and spends all her time on the computer like it is her only friend in the world.
LOL maybe Janine is in there playing World of Warcraft all day long. Hmm this sounds like a hillarious fic: Claudia and the WOW Nerd

I think "seems" is the key word here... I grew up in a town where people scoffed at intellectual curiosity. I think they've gotten better about it over the years, but I definitely felt like there was an "ooh, you use big words, you're sooo smart" mentality when I was a kid, and it made me feel like I had to dumb myself down to fit in. Of course, Stoneybrook doesn't strike me as being that type of place. Also, maybe being the older sister, she doesn't think correcting grammar is such a bad thing. Older siblings can get teacher-ish like that.

Janine may seem like a b*tch at times, but like booboo said, "seems" is the keyword. I don't think she's a b*tch at all.
In Goodbye, Stacey, Goodbye, after Stacey has just broken the news about moving back to NYC, Janine states that she can't believe it. She then corrects herself and says actually she can believe it, but that the news is quite a shock. In parentheses, Stacey narrates to the reader that "Janine is really smart and speaks very precisely." That is a much nicer way of saying it than the way they did most of the time. I liked that.

^I liked that too, I just read that book recently. Stacey was often pretty tactful when it came to Janine, at least as far as I remember.
Janine is very cute in Phantom Phone Calls, another one I just read. I like when she says the fear process is fascinating to her. Claudia thinks it's bizarre that her idea of a good book is "Sources of American Social Tradition," but that sounds interesting to me, and like a book I probably would have had to read for my major when I was in school. And when Janine asks "timidly" if she and Claudia can talk about things in Claudia's room more often, I just went, "Aww."

That book does sound a little bit intriguing, now that you mention it.

I love Janine. I wrote a random fanfic about her this morning. I think she is a very sweet older sister, but horribly misunderstood.

I like her better now as an adult then a kid, and I think it's mainly because of Claudia.

^ I actually prefer her to Claudia now. She tries so hard to be a good older sister, but Claudia shoots her down most of the time.

^I would have to agree with that. As a kid I always took Claudia's side, but it seemed like Janine was really trying to be a good older sister.

I like Janine. I can sometimes see why she would be annoying her correcting other people's speech, etc. I would probably get annoyed with her at times for that, but apart from that, she didn't seem as bad as the BSC members made her out to be.

I have to bite my tongue from my Janine-ish tendencies a lot, especially because our E7's wife is frequently ungrammatical and I just can't go around correcting her.

I'm with all of you who like Janine so much more now than you did when you were younger. She really IS kind of awesome...it's like we were expected not to like her because Claudia didn't at the beginning of the series.

^ I think we weren't supposed to like Janine just because Claudia didn't like at the beginning.
