Penny Lane, I definitely agree with your point about Mal. I didn't like how far she took the whole volleyball playing thing. I've been in a similar situation, and I sympathise with her in regards to anything athletic, but her reaction just felt a little too extreme. On the other hand, the whole atmosphere in those volleyball matches would have probably made me feel the same way too (i.e. scared out of my mind) so I'm kinda on both sides of the argument like you are.
snomihcs, I don't think you're complaining too much. I just personally feel your reasons for not liking Mal are odd, like how you mostly talk about her looking completely the opposite to you. Are all your friends little, blonde and blue-eyed? Would you never want to be friends with someone who isn't?
If you'd talked about parts of Mal's personality that might make you dislike her (like your view that she's too whiny- that's a good reason), rather than simply because she looks different to you, people might not... um, dismiss it so easily. But that's just my opinion.

I was terrified of playing volleyball too. I would dread playing it and feel really scared because the kids in my class were so competitve and I was horrible at sports, but I never went anywhere near Mallory's dislike of it.

I know! It was awful. And for some reason (like in the book too, I think?) we had separate gender gym classes, but then when we played volleyball (and just volleyball- with no other sport) we had to join the boys as well. I hate playing with boys. Practically all of them were majorly competitive.

Either I was the wimpiest wimp that ever wimped, or Mallory had some muscle on her. Archery was so hard for me because I couldn't pull the string thingy on the bow back far enough. It wouldn't have made much difference if my gym classes hadn't been co-ed because the competitive girls were just as vicious as the guys.

I'm glad to see you guys saying NICE things about Mallory. it gets tiresome when people rag on her constantly. Although Mallory may not be my favorite sitter, I was a lot like her when I was eleven.

Oh, yeah. I was totally Mallory. My writing when I was eleven wasn't much better, though I didn't write word-for-word from my life.

I think Mallory gets ragged on a lot because she's very naive. And she can be really annoying. Hahaha but I think back on what I was like when I was eleven and the things I was writing about in my diary (*groan*) and then I can understand where Mal was coming from.

Was there ever a storyline where Mallory went to the dentist and got braces? I could've sworn I read something along those lines, but I can't remember if that actually happened in the books or if it was a fanfiction.

I don't remember that ever being mentioned in a book (although I could be wrong). But now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that in a fanfiction.

She probably got braces sometime around when she turned 11, before joining the BSc.

I remember when she joined, she started talking about how she was going to have to get braces. Then a few books later, someone mentioned "Mallory had recently received braces, so Mary Anne tracks her orthodontist appointments as well" (paraphrased)

Yeah, I remember reading that she had new braces somewhere in one of the books, too. I'm not sure which book, though.
I'm also like Mal and I hate all sports. To some extent, that does make me a wimp because I'm not physically strong. On the other hand, the ones with all the brains and smarts can easily overcome the ones with the muscles. I guess it's a two-way street.

Mallory isn't poor. Her father's a corporate lawyer. I'm sure his salary is comparable to that of Mr. Spier or Mr. Ramsey. Mallory's family is on a budget because there are eight kids. Being on a budget and being poor are not the same thing.

Those early books have Jessi with glasses as well. But apparently they forgot that point along with many other things. Sometimes, the chapters two are like a game of telephone. They copied and pasted the last chapter two, change a few things that happened, take out something for space. And that is why we never see certain things again. When they try to remember things, they inadvertantly forget what color tigger is or how old charlie thomas is or that Dawn has two holes in each ear, while Claudia has two and one.
