I always assumed that Mal would be the one member to like girls (or anyone who accepted her).
Kristy -- I never thought she was gay until I found fandom.

I don't see how being a feminist and opinionated would make Kristy a lesbian though. I'm plenty opinionated/feminist, and I am totally straight. Agree. This is me, too. My mom is a lot like Kristy and is definitely straight, too. I actually don't think any of the characters are intended to be gay. I think they are as they are presented - straight.

I would say that it's statistically unlikely that all the characters are straight, and I can kind of see where gigundolyerin is going with undertones. 13-year-olds in stoneybrook are basically asexual. I don't think we can assume that anyone in the bsc is straight or gay. I also don't think that just because someone dates someone in middle school that it means they're straight--nearly all of my gay guy friends had girlfriends in middle school. I mean, it's not as if anyone in the BSC is actually having sex. I don't think we can assume either way for anyone.
Ducky is the only character in the BSC universe that I believe there is true textual justification for him being gay. he was also older than 13, and I think that between 13 and 16 there is a huge age gap in terms of development of one's sexuality.
I also don't think kristy's disinterest in fashion means anything at all. When I was thirteen I wore baggy jeans, extra-large tshirts, and listened to metal. Now I love anything pink and wear miniskirts and am really into fashion in general. What someone is like at thirteen is not a good indicator for what they will be once they survive their teenage years.

I hate how a lot of people assume that just because Kristy likes sports and is bossy that it means she's a lesbian. I have an aunt who is still convinced to this day that I'm a lesbian because I played basketball in school and don't enjoy traditionally feminine things like sewing or knitting.

You have a family and she's still convinced that you're a lesbian? You'd think she'd get the hint The ad at the top is for Logan ringtones... I wonder what that entails!

^I agree, greer. I hated shopping and clothes when I was about that age. Now I love fashion and putting outfits together(hopefully better than Claudia) ;D

Just see it as a waste of my time. ;D I think Kristy is a lot the same.

I totally agree with you - the gender you date at 13 doesn't necessarily reflect your adult sexual orientation. There are a couple of BSC members that I can't picture as anything but straight (Stacey and MA), but like you say, it's unlikely that all 10 of them were. From what I've heard about Ducky, he sounds like an interesting character, quite different from the others - I think I'll have to check out some of the Cali Diaries.

I do think Kristy could perhaps be a lesbian, but not because of the sports/lack of fashion thing. I just have this image in my head of her at 16 having this "aha!" moment about her lack of enthusiasm with Bart, and everything falls into place in her mind. And yes I know that not being ready for a relationship doesn't automatically make you gay, it's just that I can picture so clearly that "aha!" moment. Sounds weird I know, and I'm not saying I believe she's canonically gay, it's just something I see in my head.

^ Is Kristy the only one who we saw actually "make out" in the books? I am not sure, because I have not been fortunate enough to read all of them and learned this only through the boards. However, perhaps this is the ghostwriter's and Ann's way of telling us that Kristy is not a lesbian and is interested in males. Either that, or indicates how insecure she is with her feelings, since she decides her and Bart are better as friends. I can see it both ways. I think I will have to cave and order that book off Amazon.

I also don't think kristy's disinterest in fashion means anything at all. I'm still disinterested in fashion at 26, and I very much like boys. I never really thought twice about Kristy, but I did get a bit of that vibe from Abby at times, particularly in Abby's Un-Valentine. (Not that being uninterested in boys at 13 makes you a lesbian necessarily.) Whether any of them are gay or not, though, I don't think it particularly matters. The stories still are what they are. If it makes some people feel better to think of all the characters as straight, then that's fine. If a little diversity makes others appreciate the stories more, then that's fine, too. Ann and the ghostwriters never came out and said it specifically, so we can interpret it individually however we'd like.

I personally think that they are written as straight (and like and agree with sarish’s theory about the make-out scene being to show that) but that’s just me. I agree with Baseballchica – read it however you want. (obviously ;D)
A question about Logan…… Greer pointed out his corny humor in another thread and I must always overlook this. Anyone know of some specific books with good examples of Logan’s corny-ness? I’d like to reread and maybe get a different perspective.

^ I remember Logan making some pretty cheesy jokes in Kristy's Worst Idea.
My main problem with Logan was that his personality was probably one of the most inconsistent. I think the reason for this was that Ann didn't really flesh him out back when she first introduced him, so the ghostwriters didn't really have any fixed way to write about him.

^ Thanks. Not one of my favorite BSC books but I'll have to look for Logan' s jokes when I do reread. I didn't like the inconsistency, either, but I really liked him in some books, especially his own.
