I think Jessi cares that she's black more than anyone else. And, going back to a few pages ago, "black" and "African-American" aren't interchangeable the way people seem to think they are. I know a woman who's black, but she Cuban. "African-American" doesn't apply to her. But it applies to Dave Matthews and Charlize Theron, lol. But I guess it's cool for Jessi since her family is descended from Africans.
BSC in Africa should be a Super Special. And Jessi can finally feel like no one is judging her for her skin color - until she finds that there are plenty of white people who are from Africa too.
I just reread Jess Ramsey, Pet Sitter and I liked the pet-sitting storyline. The Kristy being too bossy storyline was kind of boring, but I like how they kept trying to get Mal and Jessi to take sides, and they refused. Of course, they refused because they were new to the club and didn't want to anyone to be angry at them, but still. It was unfair of all the older girls to expect them to take sides.
But it's sad in that book where Jessi shows up early for a meeting and only Claudia is there and Jessi doesn't feel comfortable sitting on the bed because "[Mal and I] are the youngest and we belong on the floor. Period." But that's still pretty early in the series. I think if that had happened later, she might have been okay sitting on the bed or the desk chair, at least until someone else arrived.

^ I sensed that too. Mal and Jessi felt subservient to them a little. I just chock it up to them still reeling from almost starting a competing babysitter's club and all of that previous unpleasantness.

^ I think she is sensitive to it but with reason. People did care when they first moved to Stoneybrook so I think some people in the books did care. Just none of her friends, which is good. ;D As for Mal and Jessi feeling inferior, I think this is common. I always used to feel "privledged" to hang out with older kids. ;D But I think these feelings are much less common among today's teenagers and those who are younger than me (I'm on the tail-end of a generation, I think ;D)

I love how Jessi keeps so calm in Troublemaker and tells the girls to stop screaming. I think she handles the situation really well. Another example of Jessi's maturity. ;D

I like Jessi, although I think that they made the color of her skin waay too big of a deal.
She also just assumes people are racist just because they don't like her.
I like how she dances and all that. Good point. I wish someone would have said that to her once. "I'm not racist, Jessi. I just don't like you!" I see you like using different colored text for different threads. Did you use black text for this one for any particular reason? ;D lol, no. my sister was yelling at me to get off the computer, so i didn't have enough time.

Yeah, I thought they made too big of a deal out of her skin color, too.

I don't really fault Jessi when her thoughts turn to racism when she perceives someone disliking her. She can't help what color her skin is and it is there for all the world to see. If someone is rude to her or ignores her or whatever, of course "is he/she racist?" will pop into her mind. Yeah, it's an assumption on her part, but an understandable one.
Jessi thinking Mal is racist in BSC in the USA is something people bring up a lot, but she didn't accuse Mal of anything, she just wondered. She could have been more sympathetic to Mal being nervous about meeting her family, but Jessi is more outgoing than Mal when she first meets people. Maybe it didn't immediately occur to her that Mal would be shy with Jessi's family, because she's not shy with Jessi. And well, hasn't everyone had a split-second thought in a particular situation and then later wondered how they could ever have thought it? That's what she did, and she regretted it.

No offense, but did you even read what booboobrewer wrote? To me, it perfectly describes the situation.
And I can understand how Jessi would assume people didn't like her because she was black too. There are some racist people, and it could probably make people a bit uncomfortable and assumptious.
