Today I learnt that the name Mallory comes from an old French word meaning "Ill-fated". Does seem appropriate in this case.

The title "Poor Mallory" is so appropriate. But there should have been a book titled "Jessi's Black"

Does Mary Anne ever get contacts? I SWEAR I remember reading that she did somewhere. Or did I imagine that? Yes. I looked it up to see exactly where it was, and it's mentioned on page 14 of #5. Mary Anne also mentions on page 108 that her father got contacts, too. There was a thread on the BSC LJ where we wondered why the heck Mary Anne had contacts if she only needed glasses for reading. You'd either be putting them in and taking them out all day, which is insane, or you'd only be able to see properly while you were reading or looking at things close-up and the rest of the time your vision would be a little bit off. Don't forget, everyone, Abby wears glasses sometimes and contacts sometimes. And Jessi claims to wear reading glasses but seems to have worn them, like, twice.

She really does hate Mal. Why does she feel the need to send her away to boarding school? On that topic, it was funny last night when I got my own copy of All New Mallory Pike in the mail from Amazon and my dad was looking at it. He said, "is this when she goes to college? Is it set in the future?" and sounded confused. I started to get annoyed with him for asking a question like that and then realized that I've been "making" him read a few BSC books so he was confused. I said, "oh, you know who Mallory is" and he answered, "yeah - she's a Pike. She has 7 brothers and sisters, is 11 years old and a junior member" and started quoting off more of her stats. It made me laugh. He likes Mal, too, and agrees that Ann seems to hate her.

That's awesome that you got your dad to read BSC! How funny.

Haha, I love that your dad was quoting Mallory stats! I used to try to get my mom to read BSC with me when I was little, and would get annoyed with her when she would ask what I thought were "silly" questions ;D

Dad seems to always confuse Dawn and Stacey. But he doesn't have the best memory for names sometimes so I try to be patient with him. Maybe once he reads a book about Stacey (his last member to read about except Abby), he will be able to keep it straight.

I used to have my mom read the BSC to me as a bed time story, but after she commented on how the girls were always saying things like "I decided to be the mature one and not argue with my brother" etc, I never let her read them again. Because me and my brother would fight all the time when we were young and I really never wanted to be the mature one (I wanted to be the one who won!)

That is soo funny Inge! My Mum got all serious once, and decided she should make sure the books were okay, (after I'd been reading them for about 2 years). She got bored like a page in, and was like, yeah it's fine. Mal does seem to always get the short end of the stick doesn't she?

The cream of the crop is that when I was flicking through a names book today I noticed that Mallory is from the French meaning 'Unfortunate'... wow she really hates Mal ;D

I feel badly for Mallory and really like her. Not sure why someone would create a character they didn't like - unless the character was a villian and even then, I can see liking them as a villian. Did Ann seem to hate Mal the most or the ghost writers? I never really picked up on this while reading the books, especially before reading this thread, but tend to overlook things like it if I like the character.
