I always thought the idea of everyone being equally good friends with each other to be a little unrealistic. They all tie in together nicely, but some inevidably are closer than others. The only one I think in some ways is a little out of place is Jessi. Would she be friends with anyone else except Mallory if not for the BSC?
Would she have even been asked to join had Mallory not been recruited in the way she was?

Would she have even been asked to join had Mallory not been recruited in the way she was? I say no to both questions. Considering how little contact the girls had with people outside of their grade it is unlikely they would have even known Jessi if not for Mallory.

I think they are a close group of friends, but some of them just wouldn't really hang out one on one without a reason. Would Stacey call up Jessi to go malling? Would MA call up Abby to come over and play with Tigger (minus allergies, lol). Nope. But I did like the odd friendships, I.e, Mal and Stacey.

I think a person could have more than one best friend. I considered all the girls to be best friends but that there was one BSC member that they were closer to (like Mallory and Jessi). I liked reading when they hung out a BSC member that wasn't their best friend.

I don't think Jessi would have become a member (at least not so early on and immediately) if it weren't for Mallory. I also thought it was a little strange and less than the BSC's normal "super official" mode of operation to take on Jessi after only meeting her one or two times? and having her go on that one sitting job. (I forgot which older sitter accompanied her. In fact did we ever read about that job of J's)?

Mallory wouldn't join the club unless they accepted Jessi too. I think Jessi just lucked out in the fact that they were scrambling to replace Stacey when she showed up. Mallory, IMO, would have been asked to join eventually even if Stacey had never moved. I can see how rushing off to a sitting job right after you've been in school for 8 hours wouldn't always be desirable, so why not find someone to take on that responsibility.

^Good points. I think it might have been more interesting reading about Mal becoming a Sitter if Jessi had not immediately been with her. We probably would have gotten to see more of a transition of her from Charge to Sitter as well as discussion of other Charges one day joining. I always wondered if Charlotte (from Mystery of Stoneybrook) ever told any of her friends that she participated in a few BSC Meetings? I know one of the VHS Movies feautured the Charges all upset over the BSC Notebook but never was that in any of the books or was any talk that the kids wondered what went on during a meeting. I'd think at least Mal's siblings since there are so many might wonder? Or Becca?

Karen asked Kristy about the club when she was trying to start the Kittycat Club. I think Kristy just said how/why it was started and how they advertised for business. She didn't give out any juicy secrets, lol.

Sparklymouse said: LOL! Drat or should I say bullfrogs? I could see Karen hitting Kristy up for info on the Club or if nothing else wanting to attend a meeting. Oldhickory, I never thought of that! You or someone should write a fanfic about that--I'd love to read it. I wonder how far back they kept the notebooks? We know (don't we)? that the Notebook was a Binder with looseleaf paper in it or was it actually a spiral? I know the Mystery Notebook was a Black Binder. Just thinking of all the notebooks they must have lying around and how to keep track of it all, especially with them being in 8th Grade for 13 years so 14 years of the BSC. Where does Claudia stash them?

i've never tried fan fiction, so if anyone wants to you're welcome to it :]
i always pictured the notebook as one fat spiral notebook, just because it seems easier to keep together than a bunch of loose papers in a binder. i have an easier time believing they actually go to the notebook to write up a job instead of writing on looseleaf paper and adding it to the binder later. but now that i think about it it's probably a lot easier to write it on individual papers, so you can write up a job as soon as you finish it. but i don't see anyone trying that hard.

IIRC there's a book where someone (probably Mary Anne) asks the treasurer for money to buy filler paper and a new notebook for the record book and sitting notebook, respectively. That made me imagine the record book as a thin binder they added pages to and the notebook as a composition book, even though doing it the other way around would make more sense -- having the entire notebook in one volume would be more useful than keeping a log of the dates and times of past sitting jobs.
ETA: It's Stacey's Lie, and MA doesn't actually specify which book the filler paper is for and which the notebook is for:

Oldhickory, I've never written a BSC fan fiction but have others. It can be fun. You should try it. I think it would be a spiral notebook as well because if it was just loose leaf paper, wouldn't it have been much easier for the Sitter to write up each job immediately after instead of waiting until the next meeting? Also, depending how many jobs they had wouldn't it be hard to keep track of some specifics? I know computers were not mentioned too much in BSC-Land but even a type writer could have been used and then the description hole punched to fit into a 3 ring binder. Lila, you rock for finding that. I am fairly confident the Mystery Notebook is that Black Binder I mentioned above with loose leaf paper. If so, then I'd guess...maybe...that the regular Notebook was the same? Maybe they had divider tabs by week/month to make it easier to sort through? Otherwise, whether it was a spiral or on loose leaf paper, it'd take forever to locate a specific job. In SM #2 on Page 85 it says: Quote: Kristy I'm thinking the Client list would have been easier kept in an address book? But then there'd be little room for specific info on each family. Computers sure would have made their job easier! Well MA's anyway. One thing, I wonder how many Calendars she went through since 1987-1998 (The BSC's 1st year of 8th Grade) went to happen for 12 more years. Or did the calendars magically erase every time a new time warp began?

Digigirl, in Stoneybrook anything is possible where time/age is concerned! On the Cover of Dawn's Big Move, Kristy is holding a pencil (in her right hand ) and a red notebook?. On the Cover of the next book, Jessi and the Bad Baby-sitter, Kristy in sitting in Claud's Directors Chair at the BSC Meeting, holding a similar looking brown notebook. Both look neither like a binder or spiral. They could be oversized spiral type notebooks without the spiral binding. My point is, I wonder if those books are supposed to be either the Record or Notebook?
