No, I'm pretty sure they have them here on the West Coast, too. At least I think so. Come to think of it, I don't know what they are, either!

Ring Dings are pieces of chocolate cake filled with cream and frosted with chocolate. I'm pretty sure they're an East Coast thing -- I know the company that makes them is based in northern New Jersey.
They're also expensive, even for junk food -- I saw them at the grocery store the other day, and a box of like 6 cost $5. If I were Claudia, I'm not sure if I'd share with my piggish friends!

I thought they were made by Hostess? We have Hostess over here.

I've never seen a Ring Ding, either, but then again, I live in Canada. (I think the closest Canadian equivalent is a Jos. Louis.) Here you can see a picture of a Ring Dings box and also read some guy's Amazon review of Ring Dings. I've never seen a Ding Dong, either, but judging from the picture on the box, they have more creme filling than Ring Dings. Have I ever mentioned Taquitos.net, the snack review site that I love? Claudia would love it, too.

Ring Dings are actually made by Drake's. I like their cupcakes better, since they don't have that waxy icing.

HohosSo they're all pretty much the same thing. Ding Dongs were wrapped in foil, yes? Personally, I prefer the standard cupcakes and twinkies. In moderation.

I can understand how maybe a good metabolism allowed Claudia to stay thin, but surely she must have loads of cavities from all that sugar!

One of the books I just read mentioned Dunkin Doughnuts. This made me laugh because of a joke about that place in my family. A few years ago, we were on vacation in the Boston, MA area and it seemed like the only fast food place for miles was Dunkin Doughnuts (Which I HATE!) and they had about 3 of those at each exit. Then my cousin moved to Boston and used to call and tell me that he was going to Dunkin Doughnuts for me. They are hard to find in MI. I just read that, though, and thought "Stoneybrook is definitely in New England". It made me laugh that out of all the fast food places, they mentioned that one since it is rare in my part of the country.

We have Dunkin Donuts here in WA, so it's not just a New England thing. They're not as easy to find as they used to be, but they're still around.

Yeah we have lots of Dunkin Donuts here, too, in Arizona. Which book do they mention Dunkin Donuts in?

You're right that Dunkin Donuts is a national thing but just rare in my area (thankfully and seem to be in abundance in New England. I think it's mentioned in Stacey the Math Wiz but my dad is reading it now (Stacey is the last girl he has to go - I'm "making" him read at least one book by each sitter. After reading Stacey's Choice he actually wanted to read another one so I have him checking for the reference. Another food topic... it grossed me out in one of the Claudia books where she was mashing her peas to make them go with her mashed potatoes. Then she said something about mashed potatoes, peas, and meat loaf being totally gross as a meal. I noticed that the writers seem to be big on criticizing balanced meals. Don't think this is such a great thing to promoste (though I do like reading about some of the "junk" - nothing from Claudia's stash, though)

^I remember that peas and potatoes line. My niece is 4, and she adores pureed peas stirred into her mashed potatoes. I would make a joke about Claudia eating like a preschooler, but I've started eating it too :/
