I can remember several instances where some of the girls would substitute the milk in their cereal with orange juice. Has anyone else but me actually tried this? Because depending on the cereal you try it with it can be either really good (fruit Loops) or really gross (Total).

^ I don't remember that in a BSC book but have done it by accident ;D It was really gross to me but didn't try it with Froot Loops. That might be okay. I am reading Mean Janine right now and thought it was interesting that they give the kids Saltines as a snack. My family always gave those to people when they were really sick to their stomachs and couldn't keep anything else down. I can still here mom saying when I had the flu, "try some saltines...." Yeah right. I was like "yuck" when I read that and thought it was a kind of strange, blah snack.

^I dunno, saltines are pretty good when they have peanut butter spread on them. Since the BSC seemed to be practically married to peanut butter they probably ate them that way most of the time.

^ That's probably why I think they're kind of gross since I hate pb too but agree that the BSC lived on it. Give me a pizza or cheeseburger description any day ;D

^ Well dang I never tried them with cheese. Now I'm gonna have to. ;D So yeah, today I was at the grocery store and saw a big old container of wheat germ, and it reminded me of Dawn and how she would eat yogurt with wheat germ in it...always did sound gross to me.

I love saltines too! I remember when I was in high school, I asked my dad to buy a box from Costco, and he said he'd get me a box from the regular grocery store, because it was smaller and they were less likely to go stale before I finished them. Of course I finished the smaller box in, like, a week My mom feeds them to my nephew (he's 2) with butter on them, but even though I eat Dora the Explorer yogurt, I can't bring myself to try that.

^ My dad eats them with cheese, too, and loves them. It's just that I associate them with the flu or nausea so they aren't too appealing to me ;D One of those family traditions, I guess, from my mom's side (like chicken noodle soup for sore throats type thing) Anyone else have those in their family?

^ My mom always made me drink ginger ale for any sickness I might have had (colds, flu, stomach cramps, anything). So now all I have to do is look at a bottle of GA and I will start feeling ill. lol

I eat my saltines with peanut butter, cheese, or tuna fish. Sometimes I'll combine the tuna and cheese. I don't really associate them with sickness, even though I often had them when I was recovering.

I had a friend/neighbor who spread butter on saltines like on toast. I tried it once and my mother hit the roof because apparently lard on a salty cracker is not a healthy after school snack. Lol.

^ ;D Speaking of butter, my cousins dip everything in it and eat it right out of the tub sometimes - gross. They also squirt cool whip directly into their mouths. Yuck. (not a cool whip fan, anyway...) Anyway, to change the subject from the foods that sound gross to me back to the ones that sound good..... In Shadow Lake, I loved the description of the hamburgers and french fries that Karen, Hannie and Nancy ate with their forks. Made me think of the big thick steak fries ;D

I think Cool Whip is revolting too -- but I do adore real whipped cream.
Funny, I used to eat butter by itself when I was very little; between that and my buttered-saltine-eating-nephew, I may have some unusually butterphilic genes. Perhaps Paula Deen is a long-lost relative of mine.
Rereading Claudia and the Perfect Boy -- have to agree with Claud that Brian Hall's egg salad sandwich and glass of milk don't sound very appealing. And then when she specifies that he finishes chewing and swallows before speaking, I was thinking, "Ew, what if he didn't?" and imagined a bulgy-muscled guy talking with a mouthful of egg salad. Grosser than an insulin injection.
