Karen's New Teacher. The kids got a grumpy month-long sub for Ms. Colman. They hated her, then made up and liked her enough to throw her a good-bye party with a gift. Karen and Ricky collected money and went shopping. They collected "almost eight dollars." I don't remember exactly how many kids were in the class at this point, but it's likely that there were more than 7.5 of them. The kids didn't like Hatey Hoffman enough to even chip in $1 each. (She got a blue flower pin that she liked.)

I looked it up and there are 18 students in Ms. Coleman's class. They got an average of 44 cents per student. Nothing says you are appreciated quite like scrounging up some change from the couch.

Karen’s Telephone Trouble. Karen was calling 900 numbers daily and didn’t realize that they cost money. Hannie knew that they cost $.95 to $1.95 each. Karen racked up a $44.85 phone bill that she desperately tried to earn money to cover before Watson found out. She charged Andrew a penny to hear a joke and David Michael ten cents to brush Shannon. (Girl, come on. The hair that you have to snort up your own nose to brush a dog is worth a few bucks.) She held a comedy show at the big house, charged 50 cents per ticket, and made another $4. (Kristy was mad at her and wouldn’t watch.) Eventually Watson got the bill and rounded her fee up to $45, lol. At the end she won a radio call-in contest from Radio One-One-One and got $111. (Even though she was 7 years old. They were all “yeah, we’ll mail you a check. Bye.”) So, she managed to pay her bill entirely and make a profit out of being naughty.
Karen’s Two Families. Astrid had a litter of 8 puppies that the Kilbournes were going to sell. Karen guessed that they would cost $10 each. Maria didn’t say the actual amount, but Karen was like “WOW, they are going to make thousands of dollars from these puppies.” I looked up Bernese Mountain Dog puppies for sale near me, and they were listed for $2400-$2600. Let’s say $2500 x 8 = $20,000 that the Kilbournes could make just by breeding poor Astrid once.

Wow, compare this one to the one above it! Karen's New Puppy:
Karen’s family adopted a golden retriever puppy from the shelter for $25. Places around here do offer adult cat specials sometimes when they are overpopulated, but generally it is at least $200+ to adopt a popular breed puppy.

Sometimes shelters near me will waive fees, either for overpopulation or if it's a national thing like the Clear the Shelters event

They do it for adult animals around here but rarely for babies. Sometimes there’s so many cats that they do 2 for 1 specials or super cheap like the $25. This was a popular breed puppy, so I don’t believe it would go for that. My kitten was “free” off the streets, and his vet bills are up to $868 so far just to get him to where he would be at a shelter. Lol.

There's a Chiefs player who covers one dog's adoption fee for every win, and for the Super Bowls he sponsors every dog in the shelter and clears them out. I think it's a really neat idea. They also do BOGO Big Macs if we record a sack which is very exciting but not as much fun as a new dog.
My dog was also free (a friend's dog had oopsie puppies) but food, medicine, and vet visits are constant recurring expenses.

Karen’s Wedding. This was one of those books where they needed to make money, so forgive me but I wrote them all down. Ms. Colman’s class wanted to buy her a wedding gift. (I liked that they were buying a gift for her and completely ignoring the new groom.) Ok, I always forget how many kids are in the class. They pooled their money in the beginning and had $19.11. Karen and her friends went shopping. They saw a silver bowl that cost “more than $2000,” candlesticks at $1800, a china picture frame for $9 (they meant porcelain, but at that price it may have been a made in China piece of plastic ), and a pen for $24. They settled on a sterling silver cup at $60 + an undefined cost of engravement. This meant that they had to earn about $40, which they did in one weekend doing their usual odd jobs. Karen cut dead roses from Watson’s bushes for 50 cents. She watched Emily for half an hour for another 50 cents. (I doubt Kristy charged $1 an hour to babysit, so Elizabeth was being exceptionally cheap.) Natalie, Terry, and Tammy made $1.25 from a lemonade stand. Hank recycled cans for 35 cents. (That was a legit money maker at one time. He must have recycled 2 cans, lol.) Finally, the class worked together to run a car wash. They made $29 at $2 per car. (Mr. Harding threw in a $1 tip.) Their total money pot was $66.17 That was enough for the cup + a 5 word/25 character engravement + tax.

Babysitting for 50 cents is only slightly less than what the BSC charges, right?

That reminds me of those posts you see sometime, trying to hire a babysitter from 7am - 6pm every day for a weekly salary of $200.

This is not from BSC, but about it. I was listening to a few episodes of the How Rude, Tanneritos podcast (a Full House re-watch podcast) today. The first episode had Steph/Jesse/Joey out with chicken pox. Danny had an event to go to and really wanted DJ to babysit. She had a sleepover to go to, so Danny was like "no prob, I'll find someone else to pay $1.50 an hour." Jodie and Andrea (the podcast hosts) were horrified at the thought of $1.50 and hour (for a chicken pox infested household at that). The episode was from 1988.

In Kristy's Big Day, doesn't Elizabeth say she's charging the girls slightly more than what they charge usually for them sitting all those kids before the wedding? And it's like $3 an hour. That book was 1987 so the BSC was probably charging around $1.50 too. The BSC would watch your kids for pennies! I was a baby when Kristy's Big Day came out but I have no idea what my parents were paying babysitters at the time. Also, what's DJ doing going to a sleepover when her home is full of chicken pox patients and chicken pox is contagious?

Karen's Paper Route. This book was a huge disappointment because it was all about jobs, needing money, and saving money, but no dollar amount was mentioned for the entire book. Karen and David Michael were going to split the cost of a new Moonbeam video game console. How much, Ann? Karen and Kristy got a job delivering newspapers. What's the wage, Ann? At the very, very end Karen wanted to buy the Paper Route video game for $29.95. This was 1998. That sounds quite reasonable. That also meant that the console should have been like $200+, and David Michael somehow already had his half of the money just like in his sock drawer or something.

It was a very cohesive story. It just lacked the details that they usually give. I'm used to reading things like "I pulled dandelions on my hands and knees for two house and Daddy gave me 37 cents."
