Well, actually, my friends and I were very interested in periods when we were in the fifth grade, you know, with the Growing Up Program and all. I remember no one paying attention to the Sex Can Wait presentation, choosing to giggle at the reproductive system diagrams in our handouts instead.

Heh. Someone in my 5th grade class said our insides looked like goat heads which still makes me laugh when I think about it. For some reason the puberty section of my health classes were always quite amusing rather than embarrassing.

hehehehe, sounds very typical. I can't help but at politicians/religious groups etc who argue the pros and cons of "abstinence only" sex ed. As far as I'm aware, kids don't really learn anything moral or otherwise in those classes. It's really all just a bit of a laugh.

Re: Judy Blume/Are You There God... I STILL can't picture how those belts work. Man, I really want that book now! The old version, with the belts.

Do any 12 yr old girls really lie in bed at night begging God for their periods
When I was 13 and most of my friends had theirs and I didn't, I did this.
At one point my friend and I discussed which Babysitters we thought had gotten theirs and which hadn't. I think we concluded that Claudia, Stacey and Dawn probably had, while MaryAnne, Kristy, Mal and Jessi hadn't. Although I could see MaryAnne getting hers somewhere in the series. It could've been a book "MaryAnne's Period". LOL.

The only distant, distant meantion of periods that I can ever remember is in Mary Anne + Too Many babies. Dawn and Mary Anne are discussing how they're relieved that Dawn's mum didn't get pregnant after all, cos they would have changed their minds about it too late, and Dawn says: "Is being a little late like being a little pregnant?"

^ Oh, poor you I am actually glad that they didn't mention puberty in the books. Maybe it would have helped some girls, but I found it enough to deal with in real life without having to read about it. Would rather not think about it unless I have to

on the sex-ed topic...when I was in the sixth grade they split us up. Girls in one class and boys in another (out of four classes on my "side"...we switched out). And honestly the one thing i remember about that was hearing about parts i didn't knwo I had...but realy not understanding a dang thing...oh and learning that someone had heard about an 8 year old girl in africa who had gotten pregnant (oh ew)

I remember I got my period when I was 10, I hated the fact that I was so early!
I remember the 5th grade sex ed classes. It was more embarrassing than anything else. Oh, did anyone else get the free samples of shampoo, maxi pads and deodorant?

^ I was the first girl in my grade to get my period at 9, for some reason. I absolutely hated it.

I didn't get my period until I was 19, so it wasn't unusual for me to assume that it wouldn't be a part of 13 year olds lives. It wasn't really something my friends and I talked about too much. It used to embarrass me.
