Thanks, Wenonah. I'm re-reading the prequel for the third time and doing so truly does make me nostalgic, long for, a fuller early history of the girls.
A highlight of this book is that Dawn insists (well she points out) to her mother that they really should serve food their guests will like at their (The Schafers' Memorial Day Picnic). Not to mention, Dawn admitting the brownies she and the Barrett kids made "smelled divine" and eating candy at Claudia's. How simple it would have been for AMM to have had Dawn mainly eating healthy foods, especially at home, but indulging or simply enjoying others as well. I think in MA Saves the Day, Dawn even ate some of the pizza. There was no mention that part of it had been special for her either.

There are the other mentions of ice cream in #9, and Jeff liking Mars Bars in #15.

Right in #9, Dawn makes her eye-rolling comment that "in her and Jeff's health-food filled lives they've maybe eaten one ice cream cone" or something like that. I do remember Jeff liking chocolate.

Danw also said once that Jeff "goes sort of crazy over chocolate cake." I don't blame him...

I just re-read and one thing that jumped out at me was when Mrs. Pike was talking with Dawn about where Mrs. Barrett was. Mrs. B had gone "shopping in Greenvale." Since Dawn did not know which stores, there was no way to reach her. Anyway, Mrs. Pike comments that even if they could reach Mrs. B, all that would accomplish would be Mrs. B panicking and coming right home. Umm, isn't the reaction she ought to have?! Maybe the wording was just weird. This is on the bottom of Page 131-top of 132.

Maybe the wording was just weird. Maybe Mrs. Pike wanted to wait before getting her really alarmed...like she might get into a wreck on the way back because she's so worried/distracted, etc.

God. That wording actually is very strange:
AND WE WOULDN'T WANT THAT, WOULD WE? To Mrs. Pike's credit, it's before anyone knows Buddy got into a car with someone.
Mrs. Barrett kind of sucks at life. I'm underemployed right now, and it's Friday, I don't have a job, and I don't have nuts to do. If I had three kids I'd be d**n sure whether or not it was my weekend to have them or my weekend to watch Flavor of Love DVDs with a case of Four Loko.

Good point, BooBoo, and one I didn't think of.
Lol, Lila! True though. I am between jobs myself and sure am not frittering away time quite in Mrs. Barrett fashion. I think the Police would have had the brains to try and track down Mrs. Barrett. Surely there was a picture of her in the house, police in Greenvale, you get the picture. Dawn should have been paying closer attention to Buddy, too. We know she forgets this incident when she moves to CA (Clover and Daffodil/Whitney Cater). In any case, I am always thankful Buddy was perfectly fine and came home fairly quickly.

I think Lila's right, thatMrs. Pike was probably still thinking Buddy was just somwhere nearby and would turn up quickly.

now that you mention it zoar, dawn did have quite a habit of losing children. all of them were technically taken from the house, not just wandered off. that's a little ridiculous.

^And not too good a baby-sitting "credential" either. I also realized that in #9, Dawn really should have spoke up to Mrs. Pike and told her that she (Dawn) didn't feel comfortable with Nicky's "two block rule." But then, it shouldn't have applied when a baby-sitter was over anyway.

I liked how Dawn tried to be friends with Kristy. I definitely don't think any of the Barrett kids were impossible.
I liked how Dawn confronted Mrs. Barrett about being disorganized and that Dawn agreed to baby-sit Buddy, Suzi and Marnie three more times to see how things go.
