^ When I posted my comment, I was thinking of people that are happy in healthy relationships.

In Trip's defense it would have been interesting to find out what Dawn's Grandparents liked about his parents and him. Too bad we never go read about Sharon's date. On the other hand, doing so might have been quite scary!

I think maybe Dawn just didn't want to see her mom dating a different guy every night like she apparently was! Dawn's mom is turning into a ho! Maybe the secret passage had a door into her mom's room too and all the guys used that to enter and exit!

Maybe he came from a wealthy family? haha. Trip's kind of a preppy nickname right?

Wiggirl, if Trip ever wanted to, he was the only other person (that we know of) who knew that the Schafers never locked the barn entrance of the passageway. I am reading Mary Anne and The Great Romance right now, even though I don't much like it. MA says that unlike her Dad, Sharon is very outgoing so maybe that explains all the men. Didn't Richard date other people too? I know before Sharon entered the picture he didn't, but before they became exclusive, I think he, too dated around a little bit anyway.
Booboo, now that you mention it, Trip does have a preppyish ring to it. Theodore Gwynn, not so much.

Richard did date other people. I remember Mary Anne saying to someone that she wondered if her dad's girlfriends liked her for her or if they liked her because they were dating Richard.

Really? When did he date? I haven't read "Great Romance" in awhile....

I don't remember the book it was mentioned and Mary Anne said that Richard dated when she was younger.

Was there ever any mention of the secret passage AFTER the fire destroyed the house? There would be this underground hole left after the remains were taken away, which would lead to the barn (and into the new house). How would you be able to cover that up?
Also, I'm with everyone when we all say that the cover is MISLEADING. The secret passage looks more like an attic. BUT when I was a kid and I looked at this, I thought they must have been in a kitchen or pantry or dining room or something, not in Dawn's bedroom (the carpet on the floor in the room doesn't give off a very good bedroom vibe to me for some reason).

This is the first bsc book where Cam "dreamy" Geary is mentioned. I do love that Mary Anne is so excited to have Stacey make her look just like his girlfriend!
One dawn snark, of course. In ch 4 she says MA is upset because the Perkins replaced kristie in her house. Then she says replacements are hard to adjust too, even if they are better than the original. How rude! She is saying the Perkins are better than kristie and in some round about way she is replacing kristie and feels she is better than the original, gag!

I don't think she's saying that...but maybe we're just reading "even if" differently.

I'm sure she didn't mean that, but given my predisposition to not liking her, that's where my mind went

^I have often thought that, too, Wiggirl, particularly because Mary Anne does act on that as the series moves on. :/
I just read through all 14 pages of this thread. Wow, Sparklymouse, what a great thought of wondering if any neighbors also had secret passageways. The girls (as the series went on) often did library or historical society research, you'd think they (Dawn especially) would have thought to look into that.
I do remember as a kid building with dominoes and legos and sometimes trying to create a secret space in a structure. This was way before I ever read this book. Did anyone else do that? I probably did just because such a room would have truly been a welcomed escape for me as a young kid. I remember in one of the Peggy Parish Liza, Bill, and Jed mysteries (anyone read those, btw) the kids' did discover at least one secret room if not two. I always thought that was so cool. Heck, it still could be a lot of fun!

^ i never tried building secret spaces, but i loved building dawn's california house from legos. she mentioned that all the rooms had skylights, and when i was little i thought that meant she had no ceiling, so i would have this sprawling complicated structure that couldn't possibly hold a ceiling.
