I hate reading this book. I cry every time. I grew up with a German Shepherd Dog and had to put him down when I was 16. It was sooo hard.
I'm not a cat person AT ALL. I don't wish harm to them, but I think they're gross. I can't stand the way they rub all over people!

^ In Tigger's defense, the reason he didn't seem real was because he wasn't given a personality. I'm not sure what that means. He was a kitten, he purred, he napped, he ate, he threw up once, and freaked out when MA dressed as a cat for Halloween. ;D He was pretty distinct to me.

U4me, my family had a poodle until she did when I was 6. I was never that attached to her but was still sad when she was no longer. Growing up, there were years I was very afraid of dogs. I think in part because a very big, nasty one loved at the corner of my street, and I always was scared he'd break out of his fence one day. When I was 14, I got my Champ and the rest is history. I still miss him every day. Sorry about your Shepherd. Dogs really don't live long enough. BooBoo, thanks for a much needed laugh. I begrudgingly admit you are very right. I still dislike cats immensly. Maybe part of another reason I didn't like Tigger was unlike Louie, Shannon, even BooBoo, Ghost Cat, and hey Pow, too, Tigger didn't seem to add to any storyline much. His main purpose was someone for Mary Anne to either look for, semi complain/whine to, or have odd dreams about. Didn't MA have a Tigger dream or did she just tell him her dream about Mrs. Kuhn, some castle type dream, and something else I can't remember right now.

Ooh - wouldn't it have been awful if they killed Tigger off in the fire? MA would have FREAKED.
It never gets easier to lose a dog - I still miss my German Shepherd and that was 10 years ago! I have another one now (or rather, my boyfriend wanted a dog and I made him get a GSD. I can't have one at my apt) and he's only 2. I already think about how devastating it will be to lose him. I love having dogs, but it's so hard when they get old.
Sorry to turn this thread into an "I love dogs!" thread!

U4me, well we don't need to wish that cruel a demise to poor Tigger. Maybe as Afton suggested once (I think she did) Tigger simply could have never been found in MA and the Search for Tigger. Or maybe he was but by a family who came to love him and MA let them keep him. That would have been a sweet way to introduce a new Charge and family. In any case, I still think he should have gone as opposed to Louie. Champ, only 10 1/2 died in 1999. He was a fox terrier so not even a big dog. :'/ The "worst" part was he had been to the dam* vet that morning, who said Champ would be fine in a few days.
I finished reading this book and another thought that came to me was how not one member of the BSC offerred any (that we read about) condolensces or support to Kristy either during or after Louie's death. OT of sorts, Kristy called Jenny a "terror" in this one, comparing her to the Delaneys, I think.

Poor Champ! I couldn't imagine losing a dog because he was sick. Duke was old and we knew it was best for him and had time to deal with it. He was 14ish.

I doubt Mary Anne would EVER have let anyone keep Tigger if she knew where he was! I just don't see that as being in character for her. Sorry about Champ...doesn't matter how much time goes by; it's still okay to miss him!

^Probably not, Starrynight. Lol, maybe the same applied to Dawn and CA. MA didn't want CA to "keep" Dawn. Thank you, about Champ. Some day when I have my own home and the time (at least right now I am) if I'm still ready I plan to adopt a puppy in Champ's honor. I plan to name him Prancer. Long story. Yes, should I ever have a Collie, too, he'd be "Louie."

Thankfully someone commented on how Amanda's hair turned from blonde to brown to blonde in one book!
Also, I thought about how uncharacteristic Shannon was in this book. In later books, she always seemed so nice. Then again, I figured that Kristy could put off a bad first impression, and Shannon was just acting defensive as a result. Kristy can probably seem jerk-ish if you have just met her.
Also, I know Kristy is upset about leaving her old neigbhourhood but who would dislike such a beautiful neighbourhood like Watsons?
Shannon, the puppy, reminds me of my old dog Shannon (a lab) who died in 1991 - this book was published in 1988, so it always reminds me of that.

Didn't Kristy sling the first actual insult at Shannon when they were waiting for their buses? I remember Shannon asked her if she was one of "Mr. Brewer's new kids" and Kristy felt like they were laughing at her holey jeans, but I don't remember Shannon actually calling her any names until Kristy started it.

I think the girls were just saying things like "so you have a little club?" and "nice outfit" and stuff like that, and Kristy was like "whatever, snob clones" and "bye snobs!" when she got on the bus. I'm lol'ing thinking about that, but I did always feel sorry for Kristy in that scene.

I think that was what happened Candykane. I think Kristy was hyper aware in that moment that she didn't go to private school and was a newcomer to the neighborhood. It's too bad Shannon was the first and only friend Kristy made on McLelland, not counting Abby.

I agree. I really find Karen so annoying. I mean poor Louie is dying and she is running around screaming at Morbidda Destiny and Ben Brewer. Ugh she drives me crazy in this series.
I love in this book how Charlie and Sam get chocked up about Louie. When I was younger, I thought teenage boys had no souls or hearts (I still think this of men in general sometimes) so it was really nice to see them getting so upset. I again cried about Louie. I can't even imagine having to put my cats down. I just recently in my life got two pets and they are my first ones and I am terrified of that day!
