For some reason, I want to say the Walkers live by the Museum of Natural History, which is around Central Park West and 81st Street. Stacey says her dad's building is at 65th Street, and I remember him trying to get her to live with him when the McGills divorced by saying it was right by Bloomingdale's, which would put it by Lexington Avenue. So to get from point A to point B, Stacey could walk along 65th and through the park (just under a mile), and then about three-quarters of a mile uptown to 81st. THIS ISN'T FAR AT ALL. AND SHE TAKES A F*CKING CAB! I felt my empty college student wallet cry out in anguish when I read that part. If Stacey is really too fragile for all that walking, she could walk two blocks downtown to catch the F, take it downtown to Rockefeller Center, and transfer to the B, which would deposit her right outside the very museum that I am assuming the Walkers live by. Admittedly, taking the subway would probably save, like, under a dollar, but I think any form of transportation besides walking is unnecessary if the route is what I think it is, especially during the summer. And who takes a cab to work everyday? Even the mayor takes the subway. I'm sorry, I really had to get that out ^ITA. When I was reading about this, I kept thinking "why doesn't she just take the subway?" This makes me think that Ann probably takes a lot of cabs. I wonder if Mr. McGill gives her cab money for the time she's there, or if she has to use her babysitting money. Either way, the whole cab thing bugged me. It's the same way on Sex and the City; the girls are always taking cabs and you don't see them too often on the subway, if ever. And what's with the constant eating out? Is this a NYC thing? Whenever Stacey goes to visit her dad, they're constantly going out to eat, and typically at NICE places, too. Are we sure that he isn't a real live millionaire like Watson??

^ I doubt Mr. McGill cooks. ;D I can see him being the kind of guy who doesn't even have the necessary items to fix a meal. I might be wrong but I can picture him having take out every night. Also, maybe he wants to "treat" Stacey since he often seems to try to buy her affection or give her "guilt money" (at least that's how it seems to me).

^ ;D I can see Stacey's dad being like that, too. I think he probably even preferred eating out when he was married.

also most nyc apartments have tiny kitchens, which are inconvenient to cook in. plus most people don't have cars and thus doing large grocery-shopping trips is a pain.

I know a lot of people who live in tiny NYC apartments with equally tiny kitchens and turn out amazing meals. Not having a car is no excuse. There are those little "old lady" carts which is essential for carrying groceries home. There aren't any suburban-sized grocery stores, but there are grocery stores--most of which deliver for larger shopping trips. Not to mention fruit stores/convenience stores within walking distance.
I think Mr. McGill doesn't cook because: a) he's used to his wife cooking, and has no idea how to even boil water (exaggerating a bit); b) he's a workaholic so most of his meals are spent eating at his desk; which leads to c) NYC is very conducive to ordering out--almost any imaginable cuisine just a phone call away--delivery is free and relatively inexpensive. I think Mr. M's penchant for taking Stacey out to these nice restaurants is his way of being a divorced dad (and Ann Martin's idea of a life in the glamorous city).

there actually ARE suburban-sized grocery stores in NYC. but a little cart is not the same as the trunk of an entire car. the way i've always shopped when i lived in nyc and other cities was that i'd buy what could fit in a backpack on my way home from work or school.
plus ann m. lived in nyc herself for the duration of the series.

Ann professes to hate cooking, so she probably ate out or ordered in a lot.

And it sounds like that would be easy in NYC. ;D I'm sure cooking would be easy, too, but there are so many tempting restaurants the way it sounds. ;D

there are, but it gets really expensive to eat out all the time if you're not an executive like mr. mcgill

Just spent five days in NYC in a hotel on 14th street with all sorts of stores, restaurants and fruit stands in walking distance I don't ever want to drive to buy groceries again. We found lotsa (relatively) cheap things to eat around our area and dear God just talking about it makes me want to get out and read every single BSC New York book:) I had many many moments like in Stacey's Mistake, being embarrassed by one of my brother's Kristy-like utterances. But oh Stacey you lucky girl to be just a train ride away...

^ Any trip sounds heavenly to me right now. ;D Is this the book where Stacey and Ethan take the kids out somewhere together? I'm not a big Ethan fan (he's okay, just not my type and earrings are a major turn off for me on guys ;D) but I always really liked it that he took an interest in and was good to the kids in one of the books that he was featured in.
