I'm rereading right now and think this is one of my favorites because I can relate so much to Mal. I know what it is like to feel like taking a nap is the thing you look most forward to. I also can really relate to getting crabby and bratty because I feel so guilty for being sick and the burden I'm causing others, especially those closest to me. I love how the BSC is so good and supportive of her - I wish I had friends like them As for the subplot, it always really inspires me to do something nice for someone. Lots of BSC books do that to me. I like the idea of the carnival and the toys for the nursing home residents. Sure, a lot of them are too old/feeble to enjoy these things and the toys are just junk, but I think it could bring at least a temporary smile to many of the people. I know my Grandpa had to be in a nursing home for a short time and would have loved this all. He was miserable while there but his mind was still great and he could do some things - like bean-bag toss and some of the other carnival games. I always picture him and many of the other older people like him who I've known in nursing homes (I've also known some very different types, too) and it makes me smile thinking about him and remembering him. I really like this book and can't believe I only read it for the first time last year. Wish I would have "discovered" it sooner.

I actually have read this book whenever I get sick for some reason. I know just how Mal felt when she had mono, feeling like she was burdening everything, how she was going to fail school. It was exactly how I felt!

I just reread and loved it as always ;D Noticed one thing, though. I thought it was strange when Charlotte was talking about being the "head turkey" in her school pageant because almost every other book makes her out to have terrible stage fright. Did she get over it suddenly? Was this instance an exception? Or was it an inconsistency and the writers forgot about her stage fright and put the stuff about the pageant in there to bring up Thanksgiving? This would be my guess but who knows.

Haha, i was reminded about this book, and I want to find it for my friend who came down with mono last year. Apparently there was an outbreak at the college of mono. This girl who was in my friend's history class had mono and strep, and she didn't stay home bcause she couldnt' afford to miss class. She coughed in my friend's direction, and the next thing she knew, she had mono. (apparently 56 other people at the college came down with it according to the ER at the hospital. My friend's mom was told to report the case to the college) I didn't mind this book. I actually liked it...then again I like the medical stuff even if it doesn't have to do with baby-sitting much... Sickness and death fascinates me for some strange morbid reason

^ Hope your friend is doing okay, blossom. Mono must be awful. That outbreak sounds like a plague! ;D I also enjoy this book and read it every time I'm sick. For some reason, it comforts me to be able to relate to Mallory because I frequently share a lot of her feelings of crabbiness, boredom, frustration, etc. when I'm sick and can't do things. I also really enjoy the nursing home subplot as it makes me think of my grandpa and how much he would have enjoyed the carnival thing and how much those people always enjoyed it when my church group would visit. I have some....interesting....memories from visiting nursing homes. ;D

Timeless quote (and I do mean timeless): "I'll be in sixth grade forever!" Oh Mal, if you only knew.... Lol! I actually liked this book because I'm intrigued by all things medical (even though I have no intentions of becoming a doctor, too much math is involved). Sure it had a strong cheese factor, but that was what made it cool. I thought it was funny when Mal was so excited to get out of the house to go to the doctor (I can't relate to that though because I hate the doctor and would rather stay in the house no matter how stir-crazy I was). Also I'm just curious because I've never had mono before, does it really last for two months or did they just make it out that way in the book? Because I've known people who had mono and they were out sick for two weeks at the most before going back to school. I am also proud to say that I learned how to spell "ravenous" from reading this book ;D.

^ I had a friend who was sick with mono for several months, though she did get to go back to school but couldn't do anything else after about a month. I think the length of recovery depends on how bad it is but I'm not sure.

You may not have seen this before so excuse my rambling but that instantly made me think of Tootie's character in Meet Me In St Louis ;D

I'm just jealous of all the naps Mallory had in this book! ;D Me too. ;D I think another reason I like reading this one when I'm sick is because it reassures me that it's "okay" to be sick and rest.

When I had mono all I did was sleep. I think I was out of school completly for about 3 months and in and out for another 2. I hated it. I felt like all I was doing was sleep!

For some reason, when I read about their trip to Costco, it makes me think of my Aunt Evelyn, who once bought an entire case of ketchup. Who uses that much in a lifetime--unless you're the Pikes? :-)

^ ;D Maybe the Thomas-Brewers. I think that's probably why they shop there - to feed the "army". I do stockpile food, though, when it is on sale so I probably don't have a lot of room to talk.... ;D
