This is one of my least favorite Stacey books because it tends to bore me. The dramatic goodbyes in themselves seem boring, since I already know that Stacey’s moving back to Stoneybrook in the next two books lined up on my shelf. I have to wonder why Ann Martin had her move back to New York in the first place, considering that Stacey was, among readers, the most popular member of the club. At least it gave her an opportunity to write Stacey’s Mistake, which is one of my all-time favorite BSC books.
I felt bad for Charlotte in this one, and enjoy seeing the relationship between her and Stacey. As for the goodbye party- I have to admit that while it was an imaginative and cute idea, if I were Stacey, I would have much rather wanted “regular” party with my good friends than a “special” party with a bunch of little kids running egg races and playing Pin-the-Baby-on-the-Sitter. I mean, it almost seemed more like a party for them than for Stacey, even if it was in honor of her. Still, though, I thought it was sweet that the kids made cards and a picture for her. I would have liked that.
Little thoughts: The book cover almost makes me laugh. First of all, there’s no need for that extra Good-bye in the title. I know it was meant to sound like people calling out goodbye, but for some reason, it tends to make me hear them saying it in a weird, fake way in my head, like, “Good-BYE, Staceygood BYE!. It doesn’t help that everyone looks absolutely thrilled on the cover picture. And on my copy, Charlotte has the same color hair as Dawn. Also, in the book, Stacey took the bed sheet with “See you soon Stacey” with her when she moved- they didn’t hang it up and leave it on her house, as the cover shows! Why would they have bothered to take the trouble hanging it up so high in the first place? They couldn’t just leave it there. Another inconsistency- Stacey’s father says that Stacey won’t be graduating for “months” when in fact it should have been already May when the story took place, or at least late April, based on the timing of the series (I think). Well, actually, she wouldn’t be graduating from eighth grade for good for another twelve years. ;D
I did enjoy the amusing parts in the yard sale chapters, though. Stacey pricing an old sweater at $40? And she thinks it's a steal?! Yet another indication that Stacey's family has to be as rich as Watson's.... ;D
