I don't remember much of the details of the book except for Stacey snapping at everyone (Haven't read it since I was maybe 14 or so) but I do remember really wanting to go to New York City (never went anywhere outside the West Coast growing up) after reading about how cool Stacey was and how it was described (finally did when I was 26). I just googled the book and it seemed Dawn was afraid of everything which sounds out of character for her.

Yeah, Dawn turns out she has a real phobia of NYC. She's terrified of elevators, robberies, mugs, homeless people, etc. Her fear returns in New York, New York! I agree it is out of character for her.

Dawn actually seems like the type of person to crusade for the right of the homeless.

I actually really enjoyed this book. It was fun seeing the sitters going around NYC doing stuff together. My favorite bits were them running around Central Park and going to the play with Laine. That was a nice way to end their trip. As far as Stacey's attitude goes, I can see where she found what the girls were doing embarrassing. They weren't totally being themselves and she wanted them to blend in. I'm glad she realized that she should've been more understanding of them. And that they all realized they could've handled things better/differently. That said, I think it's normal to act like a tourist when you are one, lol. I've never been to NYC so I would probably find it overwhelming as well. Dawn being "scared" of NYC was a bit odd though given that she's from a metropolitan area.

How true...the later books did improve since Stoneybrook is less than an hour from NYC. In Mary Anne and the Little Princess, Kristy, Mary Anne, Stacey and a couple of other BSC spend an afternoon in NYC and handle things with a seasoned aplomb, not as inexperienced tourists.

Agreed 100000%. Dawn is from huge LA and is NOT a fearful, anxious person. I don't think any of the BSC would be scared of NYC.

Some of Stacey's narration was funny like when she was talking about the cockroach..would not have blamed the BSC for being freaked out by it..but anyway, it bugged me when she got all pissy at Kristy for mispronouncing filet mignon and for offering to give the man a quarter. Mary Anne annoyed me too with how bossy she was about how everyone dressed for the party. And I loved when Kristy called Claudia out..lol.

And LA is a very different type of city than NYC, since outside of downtown, it’s more like little enclaves. I agree that the BSC being scared of/unfamiliar with NYC doesn’t make sense with them being so close. I grew up outside of Philadelphia and hardly ever went there, but the NYC suburbs are different.

True LA is different, but LA still has its rough spots like NYC. And Dawn had been to downtown LA numerous times, so it's not as if the city was totally alien to her. I live in NYC, so I'm familiar with NYC and its suburbs.

I think Dawn is even anxious in the California Diaries. She constantly worries, dissects things, second guesses herself. Sure, she was cool and projected a “laid-back” vibe, but she definitely had fears, as we all do.

But in LA you’re in your car for the most part. When the books were written, there was no reason to go to Downtown LA itself, if you are familiar with LA and its areas. (There are a lot of cool parts to it now though!) Plus she was presumably with her parents, which is different than going to an unfamiliar city with just your friends at 13.

I have never been to either NYC or LA, but I just looked it up and NYC has double the population and 3.5x the population density. LA is a big city but NYC is monstrous in comparison.

NYC has the biggest population in the US. Actually, not. I just googled now and found that while NYC has a population of eight million, LA has a population of thirteen million. This includes the downtown cities and the adjacent suburbs. I live in NYC and am familiar with it...and love it...and a friend of mine lived in LA for many years.
