I reread this one the other day, and I was surprised that the BSC make fun of Leslie Reames's wheat allergy (although not to her face, at least). They were really insensitive, like they thought it was her fault or something. Gee, it's not as if anybody in the BSC has a medical condition that means she has to be really careful what she eats... I had forgotten about that. Yeah, real nice, girls. The kid can't help having an allergy. I think Hunter Bruno was allergic to wheat, too, along with a bunch of other foods. But did they get annoyed about that? Of course not.

I think they made fun of Leslie more for the way she kept announcing her allergy. "Remember my wheat allergy!"
I'm rereading the books in order again and I'm due for this one, but I just can't get excited for it. I hate the way all of the girls act in this book.

Even Mary Anne made fun of her?

I never really felt like they were making fun of her...just they they were annoyed about all the special care they had to take of Leslie, as if they though that she and her parents were going overboard, and that Leslie wasn't really as delicate as the Reameses thought she was.

I just reread this one last night. It's one of my favorites. ^I didn't think the girls were being malicious about the wheat allergy either. Mary Anne is the most bitchy about it; when they first meet Leslie she comments "Whoa...Wheat Allergy?" Stacey described her as a "picky brat," and when the arrive to pick Leslie up, Leslie repeats all her parent's instructions and they babysitters wanted to roll their eyes. At lunch, Stacy orders a salad for Lesli because it's safe for her. So I didn't really think they were being that rude about the allergy, just that they were a bit annoyed by Leslie.

^ ITA. But still, I think they were a bit weird about stuff like that in general (*cough* MA and asthma *cough*). It's probably a good thing - the first thing my mother did when the doctor told me I'm, like, deathly allergic to cats (seriously - it's really intense) when I was five was to train me to tell people about it ... forcefully and repeatedly. If she has a serious wheat allergy, I think her parents are doing the right thing teaching her to make those responsible for her aware of it.
On an unrelated note, while it's only the beginning of the series, still, MA's "walking guidebook" thing was already old. I liked Kristy being the only one to really blend with the NYers though, I thought that was a nice touch, and it kind of put Kristy in a space the other girls are usually in, in terms of maturity etc.

I reread this book the other day and cracked up at Stacey thinking Claudia dragging her suitcase on wheels was something a grandma would do. Not anymore! Everyone uses suitcases with wheels now.

Even child-sized suitcases have them, which is probably sensible.

Suitcases with wheels are great! I think it's funny that back then they would be considered grandmotherly, and now everyone uses them.

The older wheeled ones didn't tilt like the ubiquitous ones of today.

You can get backpacks with wheels on them now. I saw a little boy walking home with one not that long ago. I remember because I thought 1) he was way too young to have that much homework, and 2) he probably got made fun of for having such a dorky (monogrammed!) backpack.

I saw somebody using one in college. I don't really like the way they look.
