Claudia's big party wasn't all what I expected it to be. I though her parents were a little harsh on the punishment. I was surprised that Janine would even agree to the party.

I wasn't surprised at the reaction of the Kishi parents. They're stricter than a lot of the BSC parents, and their punishment was what I would have expected from them.

I don't even think their punishment was that strict, considering.

I just read this one. The subplot was okay. I kept wondering why none of the sitters try to convince Bill (what Richard-esque stiff type name for a little kid) to apologize by telling him of the advantages of apologizing, like you will look like the bigger person or something. They just kept on saying that you don't apologize then you will keep being grounded. It just seemed like a bad tactic to me. That taffy symbol was so stupid. They harped on the theme of people needing attention way to much, (Janine, Claudia's 7th grade friends, BSC friends) and even a d**n cat. I forget who it was that had a neighboring cat that kept wanting attention from the family members. And Claudia grabbing a piece of cookie from the air after it was being passed around in game -- ew. That whole thing with Janine being so incredibly needy seemed so un-Janine to me. I didn't think the punishment was strict at all, either. And it seemed like Mary Anne was the one tha invited all of those people over since she said to Claudia that "you said to invite people." I don't know. It seemed as if the BSC knew that they should keep the guest list number down considering that it might get out of hand with so many people after they had reservations about Claudia having a party at her house when her parents is out of town.
Lastly, I wish that they would keep their technology (I don't know) at the same level throughout the series. At first most clients would leave numbers of the places that they would be at but in this one the Kormans left their cell phone number. And Janine using the Internet? I don't know. I remember Claudia & WSTO where Claudia was fascinated with spell check. And in Mary Anne & Playground Fight, Claudia has a computer where she typed up her application for the counselor thing.

Yeah it was crazy to read about Janine and Claudia surfing websites together.

Anyone get the feeling that Janine was written to be more socially akward in this book and so eager to please her younger (!) sister that she throws this party with her help?

I thought it was cool that Claudia kept her 7th grade friends after she went back to 8th grade. Finally someone could have outside friends without it being a huge deal.
This was the tamest wild party ever. What, 6 extra people showed up and it was a disaster? Janine should have been like "Yo, go grab a few bags of candy out from under your bed, throw them in some bowls and be done with it."
When did Peaches turn into such a dud? Old Peaches would have partied with the kids.

i just reread this book, and i have several thoughts.
1. this might say something horrible about me, but if my boyfriend is so desperate for my attention that he acts the way josh does in this book, i would ditch my friends and give him some extra time. claudia was pretty unfair. i know she feels stretched thin, but this is her boyfriend, after all. her friends should understand that josh needs some time with claudia.
2. throughout the whole series, peaches is always the cool younger aunt who does all this crazy fun stuff. it seemed so out of character that she's acting like a boring grown up here. i think maybe she was hurt that claudia lied to her, but i could see peaches pulling some stunt like throwing a party when SHE was younger. i thought she would be a lot more understanding, especially since she and claudia are so close. also, it was pretty unfair that peaches would invite herself and her whole family to something that claudia specifically told her was "just for sisters."
3. the bsc has always been so exclusive and wary of outsiders. i absolutely do not believe that they would invite all these people to their party. it seems like a really lame way to drive the plot. just 40 or so books ago, the club was throwing a fit that stacey was having a party with other people instead of them.
4. finally, i hate hate hate the super detailed descriptions of claudia's seventh grade friends (and also jessi's dance ny friends, and mallory's boarding school friends, etc). we KNOW those friends will never appear in any other books, so it seems like a wasted effort trying to introduce me to them.
haha. i think i really hate this book.

^Claudia's seventh grade friends were in other books though. They were featured a lot in at least two other Claudia books prior to this one. I loved the fact that they were still in Claudia's life after she went back to 8th grade because it was so out of character for any BSCer to have those extra relationships.

^ yeah, i respect that they were trying to introduce more characters to us, but i just hate they way they did it. they shoved all sorts of new characters in at once, towards the very end of the series, and it didn't seem natural or normal. it kind of felt like a last resort.

Question: can anyone identify all of the kids on the cover?
We have Claudia of course (one thing to say about her -- they always talk about how CRAZY and COOL her outfits are, but she is always wearing the same, less interesting outfits on the cover which ALWAYS seem to include a vest!)
Mary Anne, Mallory...
I am guessing that's Kristy on the couch? But is that also Stacey? And Josh is leaning over the couch.
Who else?

Yeah, that looks like Kristy and Josh by the couch, but I think Stacey is the one on the floor surrounded by CDs because she was in charge of the music or something. I'm guessing Janine is the other one on the floor (talking to a mystery dude, not sure who he could be) because her hair is short and she's dressed casually. I think Claudia mentions that her Korean friend Jeanie is always dressed sort of like her (Claudia). The girl in the black pants has to be Shira--tall, red hair.
Claudia's outfit is cute on this cover, I think she was wearing something completely different in the book though.

Why do I think that the girl on the couch in the pink shirt looks more like Stacey than the girl sitting down in the white and brown, holding up a CD?
I do get where you're coming from with those descriptions though!
