She goes into a lot of detail about her parents' divorce and her diabetes in the first chapter- which makes sense, since the story revolves around that. But then she just seemed to go on forever when she got to the part about describing the BSC members and how the club works. It could be just me, but for some reason that part seemed to be the longest one yet! The first three chapters were basically an introduction without any real action. I do remember a lot about the diabetes but I guess I didn't mind that because I'm always interested in reading about it. ;D This book never seemed much longer to me, probably because I like it so much. ;D

I'm wondering now, was she able to eat certain kinds of sugar free treats, or was there even much widely available back then? Or could a brittle diabetic like her not even be able to eat fake sugar? If she could, it seems odd that Claudia couldn't have come up with something besides pretzels to give Stacey during the meetings:P I mean, there's sugar free Jelly Bellies for crying out loud! But if she isn't able to have the fake stuff then I guess that's a moot point, I'm just curious. My mom's diabetic (Type II, so not the same as Stacey) and she's definitely able to eat sugar-free stuff. However, the sugar-free things we've tried - cookies, sugar-free syrup in her iced tea, Hershey bars - are kind of icky. The sugar-free Hershey bar tasted like rubber! She said she would rather go without than eat something sugar-free! Though there are some really tasty sugar-free goodies out there - gummy bears and Life Savers! Claudia could have given those to Stacey!

I don't think it ever specifically says that Stacey is type one, but from the description of what she goes through with her illness, and the fact that she came down with it as a kid sort of leads up to believe that it wasn't type two.

Heh. I was skimming the posts on the main board and for a second there, I thought this one was called "Stacey's Pregnancy." I was going 'when did that happen??' Lol.

^ Definitely me. It's kind of ironic that a book that's heavily focused on diabetes makes me want sugary chocolate, and a book that focuses on anorexia ("Jessi and the Awful Secret") makes me want fast food. There must be something wrong with me...

The Martian Fudge sounded delicious. I felt so bad that Stacey couldn't (or was not supposed to) eat some. I said this in the book thread where The Perkins girls make "green" cookies (Stacey was sitting) but poor Stace was always the one in charge of baking type projects. I give her a ton of credit for not blowing up or crying at Charlotte's fudge making insistence. Editing this to add that on the cover it looks like if Becca had only been more aware she'd have caught Stacey red-handed reaching for the fudge. Why oh why on covers are the charges or whoever a lot of the time not glancing at the person they should be! That would have made for a twist: Becca or Char catching Stacey eating some fudge. Even Dr. J. I also loved that Stacey (finally someone) said Dawn's diet was her choice but Stacey's was not. Too bad S never said that too Dawn!
What I still don't understand about this book is why Dr. J never took Char to visit Stacey and/or why it was okay for Mal/Jessi to take a trip to CA unsupervised but not a train ride to NY? (This book occurred 4 books after CA girls).
Oh and an inconsistency: When this sitting job was set it up it was from 7-10pm. The actual job as described in the book was right after school.
Lastly, does anyone else think it was not quite right that Mrs. McGill called Claudia at Charlotte's to tell Claud about Stacey? Given how this book already established Maureen and Dee Pike being friends, she should have told her what was going on and asked the Pikes to keep an eye on their house. I know Maureen was aware that Stacey and Claud are bff but her reasoning of telling Claud so no one would think the McGills had disappeared off the face of the earth (or something to that affect) didn't sound right.
I still wish Dr. J had been made Stacey's doctor and yes ITA that there's no substitute for real sugar. Are Freezie Pops similar to Otter Pops btw? I liked the Green/Red ones best. Did not like at all the Orange/Purple. The Pink...if nothing else...the blue I don't remember. Did it taste like a blue icee?

I love that a Freezepop record is used to illustrate the ice pop discussion upthread! I used to listen to their music in my car and my friends would get so mad. One of them complained that it wasn't music but "Nintendo sounds".

I liked the part when Stacey told her parents to shut up. I hate it when parents figure that kids can never "talk back to them" or argue with them. What about the times when you're parents are being completely ridiculous and unfair? I am sure we've all had those experiences. When parents use the parent-card, I find it lame. Doesn't mean there are never any douchey parents out there! Stacey's parents were arguing in front of Stacey when she was sick -- I think she was justified in what she said. Besides, she's a good kid and it's not as if it came from a horrible place. (I guess it depends on your child's personality and behaviour).

^ Omg! Stacey told her parents to shut up? It was well deserved since the parents should know better than to argue in front of their sick daughter.
