Yeah she did, and her parents got all huffy... Then her parents sulked for about 2 days, and Stacey told them not to come see her for a few days so she can think.

I did think "Go Stacey" for standing up to her parents. However, it did seem odd that neither Maureen or Ed even dropped by briefly to visit with Stacey over the next couple days. I'm sure they were in contact with the hospital but that's not quite the same as checking in on their daughter.

Yeah she did, while they were fighting in front of her in the hospital. It bothered me when her parents got mad at her instead of evaluating their own behaviour.

^Exactly and the fact that they were unable to put aside their anger toward one another for the health of their daughter. I never got the impression their divorce was that bitter anyway.

i never thought the divorce was that bitter either, zoar. it seemed like things were bad for such a long time that the divorce was kind of inevitable, maybe even a relief. but both ed and maureen took stacey's health super seriously, so in this situation i could see them both being tense and stressed out. and when you take off work to spend time with your kid in the hospital, the last thing you need to hear is your kid accusing you of being selfish.

I thought Ed and Maureen's divorce came semi out of the blue. Sure there were a few hints that Stacey's parents were arguing but nothing major or lasting. I still feel that based on TSB the McGills sounded close-ish and I wish their family had stayed (happily) together. I do agree that since their divorce was "new" (in BSC time) the added pressure of Stacey being in the hospital and for so long only added fuel to an already stressed fire.

^ There could have been a lot going on beneath the surface with the McGills. My parents rarely ever fought before the divorce; I was the only one of my siblings who wasn't surprised when it happened, and that's only because I was older and had picked up on other things. Stacey just might not have been perceptive enough.

^I've heard that some parents go outside to argue so the kids won't hear it. Maybe they didn't argue around Stacey and that's why she didn't see it coming.
So maybe it's good that my parents were always arguing in front of me. At least I was clued in!

Good point, Starrynight. Also, things could have been building up quietly for a while and/or out of Stacey's hearing as u4me suggested.

In Stacey's Portrait book, there were hints that they were already having problems when Maureen got annoyed at Ed's bringing his work with him on their Pine Island vacation. That was when Stacey was 10. Of course, that book was written long after #28 and #43...so it did seem like before that info was presented, that their divorce was more out of the blue.

I've brought this up before but reading through this thread reminds me of the McGills trying for a second child. In Goodbye Stacey, Goodbye, Ed says he wishes the news was that Maureen was pregnant. I realize that right after Stacey was born, they might have waited a few years before actively trying for kid #2. It just always struck me as odd that it took until Stacey was 11 (right before she got diabetes) for the McGills to be told Maureen could not have another child. I'm assuming it was Maureen, of course, Ed's swimmers might have become less viable, too. That could have made for a perfect adoption story.

^ you know, i never really thought about that. it is pretty strange that they were trying for so long and only got the news once stacey was in middle school, unless they actually waited until stacey was older before they started trying for another kid. i can't imagine trying to have a baby for 11 years, and fail for so long without seeing the doctor. i bet stacey would have made a great big sister too.

^I never thought about either until many re-reads of Stacey commenting on how long her parents had tried for a second child. I also think she would have made a great big sister. I was sorely disappointed the McGills never got a dog as talked about for like a second in TSB. Actually didn't Claudia tell Myriah and Gabbie that she (Claudia) wished her family had a dog?

^ I just can't see Stacey as the dog-loving type. Not sure why...I just don't.
