Yeah, I think in this particular book I can see why Stacey would be embarrassed by them - they were embarrassing! I don't like that she shirked on her sitting duties, though. Outgrowing your friends is understandable, because it happens, but the sitting jobs were her responsibility.
Dawn annoys me when it comes to "meat carcasses" and what not. It's one thing to say it to your friends in a joking manner, but another to talk to the waiter about it and actually be serious. As for going to Burger Town, you're not going to miss out on a trip with your friends just because they're going to a place that sells hamburgers. One of my friends is a vegetarian and she always says that she can find something to eat anywhere, so Dawn should just over it and order a grilled cheese.

I can kind of see Dawn's point on the meat thing though. I've been a vegetarian for a very long time, and it gets really frustrating when there is nothing on the menu; especially when you used to live somewhere where there are lots of alternatives. She probably could have just ordered a salad and shut up, but sometimes you just have to complain. Sometimes, resturants don't have a meatless salad, and you still have to pay for the meat, even if you ask for it without. Why? Sometimes it's because the waitress or manager "doesn't want to have to figure out the cost difference" I mean, come on. Why are people in this country pressured into eating unhealthily?
I could go into a rant now about how they made us buy a meal plan at university but only served things that were fried, meaty, or salad bar. But I won't.
Any goodwill I had towards Dawn fled though, after she was spying on a friend. That is so absurd.

My college had the worst food ever. Half the time it was completely inedible. I couldn't wait to live in the on-campus apartments my junior and senior years so my roommates and I could have our own kitchen.

I didn't even live on campus at my college, but I dated a guy who did so we ate at the cafe a lot and it was gross. It all tasted like high school cafeteria food - generic, frozen crap. Yuck. I also hated Dawn complaining about "cow carcasses." Her vegetarianism was one thing about her that became more extreme as the series progressed. She went from eating chicken on the plane in SS#5 to acting like anyone who ate meat was a murderer.

My experience like this book went like this.A girl in one of my clubswanted to be with other people. She was embarrassed my me and other members. She also lied to us and skipped meetings and events. This story didn't end happily. She never returned to the club.If it were a book.It would be called -VS. The Perry Mason Club. The line was to protect her name. This happenned two years ago.

I was afraid to read this thread because I thought it would be all pro-Stacey. Glad to see it's not. I know others have pointed out that Dawn was freaky in this one with all the spying and such. My take is that she was really hurt by Stacey. Of course Mary Anne would cry about any club member, and Kristy would think about the club first no matter who was the problem, and Mal and Jessi would sit on the floor and say nothing no matter what. Dawn had just moved back to Stoneybrook and was promptly rejected by one of her best friends. Don't forget, in 7th grade Dawn would sometimes sit with Claudia and Stacey at the "other" table. She was probably surprised that she had dropped in social status. You know, if she wasn't too much of an individual to care.

Stacey had a right to hang with Robert and her friends, but she could have at least told the truth about what she was doing when she asked Mary Anne to sub for her. Now I thought that it was immature of Dawn to spy on Stacey and her friends. I could clearly understand Claudia feeling like she was caught in the middle.

I also saw how Claudia was caught in the middle of it all, and I felt bad for her. I also kind of felt bad for the other girls after they realized that Stacey didn't think they were "cool" enough for her anymore, but Claudia somehow still was (since Claudia got invited to the party at Stacey's and the rest of them didn't). But I still love Stacey and I could relate to her side of things, too. At that age, friendships are constantly evolving.

I finished this book today and I have new insights to the book.
I'm also a health nut like Dawn, But i would never act up and go "eww cow carcass" Or "Eww sugar." i feel its not my buisness to judge others on what they eat. I think Dawn should be a lil more chill like that. Dawn should be a little more tolerant of people's differences. Spying was a little too much as well.
The idea about the Kristy and her sweatshirts and stuff I will agree that her ATTITUDE is a little babyish. Kristy flat out refuses to dress a little more proper when the situation arises. I can understand liking jeans/sweatshirts for your normal style and all, But the stubborn attitude when she has to dress up she acts like it is the biggest inconvience to her.
Like, all the formal occasions Kristy acts like people are out to kill her or something. Its for, a day. Learn to be a lil more accomodating, especially if it is an event for your friends or family. She doesn't need to be so self absorbed.
Maryanne was being a lil hmm, im torn between the cat entusiasm really. Part of her sounds a lil obsessive with the cat, in an unheathly Crazy Cat Lady kind of thing. I don't know, maybe when you read stuff about her and the cat for 50 odd books it sounds to be annoying.
Now, the behavior in public. The behavior was too much. I dont care who you are that straws up your nose, giggling over boys, that is very very childish.
Stacey was being a little bitchy but I think her thoughts were justified. She is growing up and realizing she wants other things. She should have been honest about the sitting job transfer though. And she should have paid a lil more attention to things too. The Jamie thing, I didn't see how she was so out of line. THe kid didn't eat his dinner, so of course she would think that the belly ache was lack of food. Medically speaking, yeah, that happens. When she ignored him it made me laugh. I kinda found jamie a lil annoying from time to time.
But yeah. its really a mixed feeling though.
I can relate to Stacy here. I have friends i am outgrowing as well. I'm 25 yrs old and my friends act like they are still in highschool. They are very childish and don't have gumption to work, they rather sit around and laze around and blow all their money on Anime cons and anime junk. They make sexual jokes in public and they doodle penises on napkins, the sugar packages and with their ketchup in resturants. One of them likes to draw nazi symbols in the dust on people's SUVs or 666 or Hail Satan or Heil Hitler on it or she'll just draw a thingy and think that is hysterical to do. Or they dress like an anime cartoon character in public for everyday wear.
Now i like video games and anime, but I dont think that behavior is necessary in public, ever.
I still love my friends but i don't like the things they do, and its hard not to cringe and go "oh god she HAD to wear a Pokemon shirt to the mall with me"

I could see both sides of the fight. If I were Stacey, I would probably be embarrassed by the members of the BSC and I can understand Stacey being tired of the rules, being on time, etc. On the other hand, Stacey shouldn't have slacked off her jobs like that.
I loved the smackdown at the end. Maybe it was a bit late in the series but it was worth it.

I know I always complain about how the "Jessi's black" meme is so overdone and not even funny, but during Stacey's first BSC meeting after she goes to Pizza Express (which I don't think was such a big deal -- in the phone conversation with Mary Anne, Stacey never actually says "emergency," just that it's something important. MA tells Dawn that Stacey said it was an emergency, which is where I think all of the BSC's "STACEY TRICKED MARY ANNE!" hand-wringing comes from), she describes the rest of the BSC as "the Six Sisters of Doom: Grim, Grumpy, Glum, Sullen, Somber, and Bleak". I got a good giggle out of wondering if Jessi was bleak.
Reading as an adult, I'm more on Stacey's side than I think I was in the past. Really, the only innocent victims in her Reign of Coolness are Charlotte, Jamie, and Mary Anne, and Stacey either apologized to or made a legit effort to make things up to all three (Charlotte annoys the nuts out of me anyway so I could not possibly care less about the emotional scarring caused by Stacey skipping out on the talent show). Kristy and Dawn were intolerable, and I felt Dawn especially was looking for Stacey to screw up just so she could call her on it. How did she even know to spy on Stacey at Pizza Express? Did she follow her there or something? And then her reaction to the party is a smug smile! Why would she be happy about being left out, unless she was just looking to have ammunition against Stacey in the first place?
Stacey's observation that the blow up "isn't a meeting, it's a firing squad" rings pretty accurate for me. Claudia chastises Stacey for being unable to have a reasonable discussion -- AFTER Kristy brings up the Burger Town night, which wasn't really any of her business, since Stacey hadn't lied about going there or skipped out on any jobs to do it. It does seem that the girls just want to yell at her and call her out on not being a flawless club member. It's realistic that they wouldn't keep their complaints to only Stacey's club-related faults, but I can't blame her for getting angry once they started bringing her personal life into it.
