Oh, OF COURSE the author lives in Stoneybrook. And OF COURSE the artist Claudia loves (in the mystery book - something about the Missing Art) lives in Stoneybrook. EVERYONE just happens to live in hole-in-the-wall Stoneybrook. I heard Madoonna was house shopping there last week. just like Sweet Valley - Jessica Wakefield's favorite rock star just happened to move there and his daughter just happened to go to SVH

^ Well, Stoneybrook and Sweet Valley are utopian communities in a way. ;D Makes sense that the rich and famous would want to live there. ;D

i am sure that being in the general nyc/la area also helps sv and stoneybrook attract celebrities.

So I'm reading this ebook, as I started to feel bad about skipping it in my re-read. But ... no, now I regret that decision. Since when is Claire 4? And wasn't Mr Pike out of work for awhile, and therefor no new toys? Apparently that's off as Vanessa is playing with a Skip it in the house, and Margo and Claire are playing some game that involves balls and velcro, and they have some new toy for Pow... What 6th grade gives assignments that are worth 80% of someone's grade? Not cool SMS. No wonder Claudia's grades suck. And how cute, Mallory is writing to her favorite author. And why do these girls always have to race into the meetings at the last possible second? it's like that in every book - the narrator races in, slides in, barely makes it on time... yea. Way to be cool there Mal, SLIDING into Claud's room like a baseball player sliding into home base. And ow. Does Claudia have carpet? Cuz... rugburn. Actually, I might enjoy this book, if only for the Mallory Jokes.

I don't mind this one, either, greer. Not my favorite but not too bad from what I remember. As for the "no toys" thing, I always assumed that was when Mr. Pike was out of work. Poor Mallory was quite a while before this one, I think, in BSC time especially. ;D

This is the only BSC book before 115 that I don't have. Should I bother trying to find it? It sounds crap.

^You could read the e-book, and decide for yourself.
I don't think I hated this one as much on my second time through. It had a few redeeming factors. Mallory not getting the praise she thought she deserved for her stupid "have the kids put on a play I write" was awesome. I love the fact that not everyone in Stoneybrook worships the ground the BSC walks on.
"I sighed so loudly, the librarian gave a warning glance." ... Oh Mal. So over dramatic.
And the Spikes - classic. But "All great literature is basically autobiographical." I like how Stacey tried to point out stuff like Charlotte's Web and Peter Pan, Mal decides that's not great literature.
Yes, Mal, you do deserve the Spaz Girl nickname. You should have failed this assignment for being so stupid. I'm sure other kids did plenty of work too, actual work, like research and writing a paper. They probably understand what fiction is, too.
(It was worth reading after all. It was pretty funny, although I'm not sure if that's how the author intended it to be. And I think my biggest problem with this is simply that I don't like Mallory. I liked her when I read these before -- but now, I just don't.)

^ About the other kids doing research and writing a paper, didn't Mal ask her teacher if she could do that and he said he wanted something more "hands on" or something like that? I might have the wrong book or be remembering wrong, though. If I were any of the kids in the class, my first choice for a project would have definitely been a paper. Those tend to take a lot less work than "hands on" busywork. ;D

^Oh, she turned in her project proposal (apparently, her sixth grade had kids write out project proposals. I remember filling out worksheets and writing book reports. I don't throw out old papers, so I'm sure I could find them as proof). She had a vision of her teacher thanking her vision and saying she was immensely talented (ala Christmas Story), but he called her up and said that just writing a play for kids wasn't enough. So she ended up doing that, plus interviewing Ms Haynes, doing research on the author, and (I think) writing a paper. Then at the end, he comes to the play, comes up to Mal and says "Between you and me, A+, best project in the class". Well, IMO, she could have written just the paper and got the same grade. THERE IS NO REASON to have such a giant project in 6th grade. It was like Mal suddenly had no other classes, no other obligation... just this weird ass literature thing.
Of course, I've done my fair share of overachieving. But I also learned that it's useless when grades aren't curved. (took me until college though. Last semester.)

^ Thanks. What I was remembering that wasn't enough was the play. Guess it's time to reread. It's been a while. ;D What time of year does this one take place?

Mal said that "JM Barrie is not one of the world's greatest writers." What makes Mal an authority on literature?

Apparently that's off as Vanessa is playing with a Skip it in the house, and Margo and Claire are playing some game that involves balls and velcro, and they have some new toy for Pow... The Claire being four thing annoyed me SOOOOOO much. Mr. Pike got a job at the end of the book where he lost his job, before his severance pay ran out, so I guess they could afford new toys. Though Skatch and Skip-It were already kind of out of date when that book was written...
