^ Never thought of it but you're right. Didn't someone do it for something other than moving, too? For some reason, I seem to remember another kind of "list"

I agree with the general consensus about loving this book! For everything that has been mentioned... the house, the relationship, Disneyland, the Austins, the W<3KC, everythign. It just has a great feel to it, and I agree with aln, that it is one of the last 'original Dawn' feeling books.

Maybe it's becoming sisters with mary anne that really messes up dawn's character.

One of my friends liked BSC for a little while because I showed her Jeff's picture on this book (we were nine or ten) and she thought he was hott.

I have to be a lone (or one of the few) holdout(s) on not particularly liking this one. I did like the description's of Jack's house and loved how he made mention of the Secret Passage to Dawn. That moment made it feel like Dawn really did share things with her Dad and have a relationship with him. Also, I think this is one of the only books were BSC Members (Dawn) actually spend vacation time with their family as opposed to the BSC as a group. I wish we had gotten to read about Kristy in Hawaii. I confess to still loving Disneyland. I lived only an hour, hour and a half away as a kid, and generally would go at least once a year if not twice. If only during any kind of major holiday (spring break in this book) the lines moved that quickly! Love how they managed to not only buy their tickets but go on 4 or 5 things before lunch--although if they arrived very early it could happen. I thought it was nice of Dawn to buy MA the Minnie Mouse doll but did wonder about the mouse ears. Anyone one here ever worn their mouse ears outside of Disneyland or Disneyword? Thought baseball hats would have been better. It would have been funny to see a picture of the BSC wearing the ears. As for Dawn's "voice" I noticed the change beginning. Although she did only shrug when Clover wanted cotton candy. The BSC's pizza decision wasn't as drawn out as usual. MA was already saying "this is Dawn's party let's get what she wants." I still fail to comprehend why Dawn did not always get a few separate slices or a personal/small pizza just for her each time. No "arguing" or I'd think for the other members spending extra money because of Dawn. A "funny/annoying" moment was when Dawn said she wished her mom would come to CA but knew that would be impossible." Why would that have been the case? Talk about perfect opportunity to talk with Sharon about this! It wasn't as if Sharon/Richard were married yet, for all Dawn knew her mom missed CA as well! Only other comment is I can totally see Nicky Pike crushing on Dawn as he gets older.

Whenever Dawn's talking about how everyone in California eats healthy food, I wish she would read Fast Food Nation, since one entire chapter is about how the fast food business basically started in Anaheim. You know, THE AREA WHERE DAWN GREW UP. She would be so horrified. I really, really want Dawn to know this. Darn the luck that she isn't real I thought it was nice of Dawn to buy MA the Minnie Mouse doll I had a Minnie Mouse doll as a kid...it was so cute. Don't remember where I got it from. I want to start reading "summery" BSC books, this one's on my list, think I've only read it a couple of times. I'll come back to post my thoughts on it...

^ i never read them seasonally. i would love to, but mostly i just pick one i haven't read in a long time.
zoar, i always wondered why sharon never visited california again. even though stoneybrook was where she grew up, she spent something like 20 years in california. personally i get homesick for places i visited on vacation, so it's hard for me to imagine how she could leave california when it had been her home for decades. why couldn't she (at the very least) accompany dawn one time?

^ Maybe Sharon has more bad memories of California than good memories, which maybe the reason why she never returned to California.

BooBoo, I always preferred Mickey but most likely had some sort of Minnie as a kid, don't remember. For the longest time growing up I loved my disney sheets. Later on, I remember getting (I saved) a big stuffed Pluto.
Oldhickory and Anzuhana, maybe Sharon (still) equated CA with her divorce and any positive memories might have been on hold. I completely agree that certainly after Dawn came home to CT, following this trip, it makes logical sense that the two of them would have had some discussion about at leasta visit where Sharon did go. I wonder if Jack had any regrets about the divorce? From, Ghost at Dawn's House? I forgot already, some earlier Dawn book than this, Dawn outright states her mom misses Jack, too.
Other thing I just thought of was, wouldn't Sharon want to, if nothing else, spend time with Jeff in the place he most loves? Later, maybe, She, Richard, and MA might take a trip out West as a family.
Courtky, sorry for missing your post above mine, I thought Jeff (from the cover pic) would turn out hot as well.

Okay, so I really like this book (despite all the sunny CA references; on Dawn's pros and cons she lists "the sun" and "healthy food," yeah, I'm SURE those are nowhere to be found on the opposite coast). I think it's well-written and fun. I laughed when Jessi stretches out her legs at the sleepover and Mary Anne is like "Wow!" That's probably in the sexual references thread...

Just re-read the Stoneybrook parts while skimming some of the CA ones. What struck me as sort of odd was that 10 year old Jeff was so excited about going to Bear Country in Disneyland and that he took two rolls of pictures of Dawn. Cool he missed his sister but doesn't that not sound like a typical 10 year old boy? I would understand it greater if he had asked other people to take pictures of himself, Dawn, and their father to show their new CA family or something but yikes 2 rolls of Dawn photos!
Mary Anne sure is into girl observing! Also this (might)? have been the beginning of Mary Anne's obsession with Dawn. MA signed her letter to Dawn "your (best) friend" and I think suggested in other ways (probably the pizza at K's again) that Dawn=the almighty and as her (MA's) new bff, was everything. I really do think Mary Anne developed an unhealthy attachment to Dawn. But then this was the same character who berated Dawn "to get out of her life forever" so who knows? Does that make sense though?

Does that make sense though? Mary Anne seemed pretty extreme with her feelings and reactions to things. On the one hand, she tells Dawn to get out of her life forever because she forgot to pass on a phone message, but on the other hand, freaks out and smashes a mug on the floor when Dawn tells her she's moving back to CA permanently.

MA absolutely had an unhealthy obsession with dawn. since dawn was the first friend she made on her own, she probably felt that dawn was more "hers" instead of kristy's friends or claudia's.

^Now that you mention it, it's not surprising that she would become very emotional over the first friend she made on her own "leaving" her. Hadn't thought of it that way before.

^ That's a good point....I wonder why that that wasn't explored more in the series? We got plenty about Claud being upset at Stacey leaving for NYC because Stace was her only best friend.
