^ It is, especially considering Watson had a heart attack prior to this book. I would have thought that if he was smoking, he would've stopped smoking altogether after that event.

You would, wouldn't you? And in 2013, he would. We forget how much has changed about smoking in the last 15 years. I came across a magazine from 1996 in some old stuff of mmy grandmother's and it had several cigarette ads. Boy, did that seem odd!

Oh man, I think this book might be my least favorite cover in the series. Stacey looks awful. Besides that, I really dislike the concept of the cover. If I saw this picture without knowing it was a Stacey book, I would assume it was a Claudia book. Generally on the mystery covers, the narrator is supposed to be the one who looks the most aware of the situation - y'know, like she's the detective. Claudia looks like the detective because she looks like she's suspicious of something, and Stacey is 100% oblivious to what's going on.
I also prefer the covers that attempted to look scary or spooky (Beware Dawn is probably my favorite mystery cover, for example), and this cover is neither. I wish the cover had been a picture of one of the creepy lipstick messages on the mirror.

I remember seeing this cover for the first time and I also thought Claudia was out of place. In fact, I didn't even realize it was her at first. It doesn't really scream Claud to me, plus she looks like she's in her 20s (or older!) and a Native/Latina mix or something.

I actually loved this book. Mind you, I haven't read Dance School Phantom yet, so that might be why. I dunno, I just have this liking of these sorts of books, where we know the perpetrator is one of the group. And it helps that to this day I am abysmal at guessing the endings of mysteries! I like it that way; it doesn't spoil the fun!

I liked some of Cokie's scenes but I thought the tone was a little too anti-modeling early on and then near the end awkwardly tried to emphasize modeling's fun or positive aspects and that didn't feel consistent or work on its own either. Aside from Cokie the supporting characters/suspects felt pretty underdeveloped so the mystery aspect wasn't as fun as in some other books.
Abby was really annoying in forcing kids to go outdoors and it wasn't really convincing that they all ended up liking it.

I've never smoked and don't like smoking but it still felt a little too sugary-sweet that all the adults seemed to be appreciative of the children trying to get them to stop rather than some reacting more like "mind your own business."

^true. There is a show called "Impractical Jokers" and one of their pranks was to take a lit cigarette out of strangers' mouths on the streets and throw them away. They uh, weren't happy about that. Lol I smoke sometimes but never in front of kids. Some of the adults in this book didn't even do it in front of them, I think, like Cecelia. I don't think Watson should have buried his expensive cigars, but hey, what's it to him if he's a millionaire at least he set a good example.
