I remember seeing such a survey in the back of Mary Anne and the Search for Tigger, which was published in 1989. The results were from the Baby-sitters Club Super Contest, which was from July 1988 and that more than 27,000 readers sent in their votes for their favorite sitter. Stacey got the most votes, with more than 8,500 votes. Claudia got more than 7,300 votes, Dawn got more than 4,600 votes, Mary Anne got more than 4,000 votes and Kristy got more than 2,200 votes. Obviously Abby didn't get any votes since she didn't arrive in the series yet and no votes were mentioned for Mallory and Jessi. Also, Stacey's Portrait was relelased in 1994.

So five years passed between the survey and the first portrait book. That's a long time to wait to use those results. Kids' opinions change so frequently.

Maybe they had frequent polls on who the favorite sitter was.

^ Maybe that's the only guide they had to go on when they were deciding which order to publish the books in? Stacey would be a good choice to go first because she was the most popular sitter. So if the selling of her book bombed then it could be a good indication that the rest of the series wouldn't do so well. Also, I noticed that the publication of Dawn's book coincides with her leaving Stoneybrook (published right after Book #88) so maybe Scholastic was trying to give a "present" to Dawn fans who were upset with her leaving? Or maybe that was just good planning on their part?

I personally really enjoyed the order the portraits came in...Stacey and Claudia first, then Dawn and Mary Anne, and then Kristy. Yep.

I liked the order too, and at the time thought they did Stacey first to keep us from finding out she was going to drop out of the BSC soon. That's interesting information about the 1989 survey, and she is my first favourite too followed by Claudia, and then Mary Anne.

I think they used the survey results. It's too much of a synchronicity (coincidence) that all 5 girls would be published in the exact same order of popularity.

Yeah, they were probably in the making for 5 years....and I have a feeling the story at the end of Mary Anne's Book about struggling with her grandma was decided last minute, cause it was not the same as the letters from Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic
Also, all the little kid pictures in the front (and back) of each portrait are from the end of the 1993 calendar...I thought young mary anne's outfit was sooo cute and it reminded me of the cute things I wore or wanted.

I thought the tea party story in Mary Anne's portrait was cute, and it was nice to see that her teacher was not all that bad though she seemed strict before. The invitations for tea she made sounded neat.
