Did anyone else finish this and still want to know what Mr. Fiske was up to? Why was he so interested in copiers?
I always get the cover of this one and the new cover of The Truth About Stacey mixed up because they're set up almost identically.
And can we please talk about the cover of this book??? I like that Charlotte and Stacey fit the book descriptions, but the setting isn't at all how I pictured the Merry-Go-Round. This looks like an upscale jewelry counter at Belair's, especially with the blazer-wearing saleswoman. That's not at all how I picture the Merry-Go-Round, which I picture to look small, colorful and cheap with a high schooler running the register, like a Claire's. Also, the store looks so big - that guy in the background behind Stacey looks so far away.

The mall in the town where I grew up had a Merry-Go-Round store for awhile in the 80s. I remember it was similar to a Claire's as far as having the cheap, colorful trendy stuff, but they also had clothing in addition to accessories.

My idea of what Bellair's looked like came from this cover!

So the store in your mall was called Merry-Go-Round? I wonder if the writers were basing their store off a real chain, or if it was just a coincidence.

Did anyone else finish this and still want to know what Mr. Fiske was up to? Why was he so interested in copiers? Gosh, yes! I just reread this book, and while I remembered the main plot pretty well, I had forgotten that we never found out what Mr. Fiske was up to. I was totally expecting that near the end one of the girls would say, "By the way, I was talking to Mr. Fiske today and blah blah blah" and it would explain his current copier obsession and everyone would laugh. I was kind of disappointed when that didn't happen. Oh, well, I guess having one loose end in the book adds a bit of realism, since absolutely nothing else about it is realistic.

I wish we'd found out what Mr. Fiske was doing, too!
This is unrelated, but for some reason I've always pictured Mr. Fiske to look exactly like my junior high science teacher. I have no idea why.

I didn't wonder at all. I just assumed that as a teacher, he needed to make color copies of something for class. And the BSC is completely in the 80s for me, so it makes sense that there would only be a black and white copier at the school, and he'd have to make color copies on his own dime if he wanted them.

Does anyone else find the Stacey-Char shopping trip sort of inappropriate? I guess I found it strange because I see (except in the early books, where the BSC is more informal and Kristy less demanding) their relationship as sitter-client more than siblingish. Esp because Stacey seems so much older in this book that it's easy to forget she's thirteen, and then we have Charlotte "blushing" at feeling grown-up. I dunno, it doesn't ring true to me.
I liked the mystery, though.

You're the one who's inappropriate, weirdo
Kids would be getting into less trouble today if they had someone positive to look up to.

Wow, okay, I just went back after reading the stuff in the thread about age, and this is NOT the way I think any of the board members want discourse to go on this board. Name-calling? I think one of the things that has made many of us want to continue to discuss things on this board for 5, 6, 7 years is that, despite the diversity of opinions and religious views and lifestyles, we all get along for the most part and find common ground. I don't want to see the board at a place where someone is called a "weirdo," ESPECIALLY someone new who so far has been an active member who has contributed to and started discussions.

Just to get back on topic...I'm rereading this at the moment.
Charlotte is super annoying in this book, although I guess that an 8 year old would be upset at seeing her babysitter go off with policemen.
I think I'm in the minority on the Charlie/Tasha thing. Yes, he should be looking at girls his own age, but in fairness, he didn't know how old she was - she could have passed for being a bit older.
At the meeting at Claudia's one morning, Kristy worries about the reputation of the club due to Stacey handling the counterfeit notes. Uh, really? Adults are not going to think for a moment that the club is involved.
Another thing I liked about this book was it telling us about the engraving on the bank notes. When I was 18, I worked in a cash and carry and we handled a lot of cash. One day, I was given a note and it felt really smooth. I thought of the BSC and checked it with a counterfeit pen - it was a fake!

^ When I worked at a fast-food, we had a scanner for detecting fake bills.

I'm more worried about how far the lady at the counter went by taking Stacey to the station for questioning, I don't know if anyone would go that far or not. I would imagine they would go to Bellairs since she had gotten the bill from there, and they are the ones responsible for not catching that it was fake, and it had just happened.
I think when I briefly worked in retail, we had to scan bills too, but I didn't stay long enough to really remember.

Hmm, I think that in this case, the FBI was already involved (having sent David's dad to Stoneybrook), so it may have been taken more seriously than a regular case of a counterfeit bill would have been.
