Come to think of it, while Charlene (wasn't she the counselor in Dawn's cabin) did come across at the very beginning as nice and fun (when the campers first met and were getting their luggage together, I don't think she ever did try to make camp better for Heather. Didn't the mean girls say stuff like "what a baby" and "what a bore" about Heather when Charlene was in earshot? I seem to recall Charlene saying something mild like "that's enough, guys" in response. But yeah, she wasn't really doing much to make Heather's experience better.

I think, at the time, bullying was taken less seriously and there was a more "kids will be kids" attitude.

I think this place takes in the Catskills, if I'm remembering correctly. I used to vacation there when I was little, and I can easily picture there being enough woods to get lost in. Ann actually lives around this area now, interestingly enough.
I have only gone camping once, with a friend of mine to a place pretty far outside the city. The village just had a couple of houses with one store, and then we hiked pretty far. I would have totally gotten lost, way more than Dawn's counselor, if I had been by myself, haha. But Russia is like that; people live in clusters and then there's vast wilderness.
Also, it was totally irresponsible of the camp to send them off into the woods with an inexperienced fourteen-year-old. I can easily see my dad making noises about suing if it had happened with one of us. Weren't all of the other counselor around eighteen or so?

Candykane, I apologize, I got Charlene (Dawn's counselor) mixed up with Meghan (Claudia's counselor) who made the campers transition from meeting the first time to the cabin a positive one. The only thing I can think of is maybe I remembered liking Charlene because her name is similar to Charlie who is a wonderful big brother? Anyway, starting on page 135 is when Dawn fills us in on Heather. According to Dawn, "the other campers think she (Heather) is weird." Heather prefers either solitary activities (reading and writing) or quieter ones (arts and crafts) to group ones. Oh and she is the camper who doesn't know how to swim. I wonder if that perhaps is part of why she hangs back? I mean maybe she doesn't want anyone to discover that. I would hope Camp Mohawk would have discreet ways of offering extra lessons to those who wanted them. Makes me think of Watson who helped David Michael learn to swim better (Baby-sitters on Board) and Seth who secretly helped Andrew learn to skim board in "Karen's Mermaid." The nasty comments are at the top of page 137. Donna says :the best thing to do is ignore her," to which Freddie and Caryn respectively reply "What a baby," and "What a bore." "Charlene finally calls that's enough from behind her curtain." Greer, my apology to you for causing your posts to be back to back. When I had originally posted my comments I think we both hit post at the same time or really close together because I didn't realize you had posted above me until after the fact. Maybe Charlene was simply tired and wanted some time to herself--in terms of not wanting to bother to step in. Whatever the case might have been that wasn't right and as I said she should have wanted to be sure all her campers were having a good time. I do think at least one of the counselors in this book was 18. As for the 14 year old, I just found it on the top of page 175. Debra is 15 and was a CIT the year before. Maybe before the overnight, she should have re-familiarized herself with the trail. Surely Dawn's cabin and the one next door could have switched overnights?

^they could have maybe sent a staff member along, or sent a more senior counselor from another cabin and sent Debra to stay there for the night. It just seems they made the worst decision in the situation at hand.

^That would have also been a good choice. Another possibility would have been asking a staff member or two and/or as you said one staff member and older counselor and just have had both of the 9 year old cabins go at the same time. I think Mrs. Means had the right idea of wanting to assure the campers that their overnight and other planned activities would still happen, there were just more thought out ways to do that. Or maybe the intended trail really wasn't that long or deep into the woods and it shouldn't have been too difficult or big a deal. Whatever the case, I'm glad Heather saved the day and hope Charlene's mom was okay, too.

This is a series where we're supposed to think Aunt Cecelia was sooo strict and dramatic for freaking out about Jessi being left home alone with the kids for the weekend, so I think a lot of the adults are just missing the "safety and logic" portions of their brain

This and Snowbound are my favourite Super Specials! Every sitter actually gets a legit story line here. And one thing I enjoy is that sitting occurs all throughout the book, but it doesn't take over their experience.

I've only read this one once, but remember really liking every bit of it! This is the one with Logan being sneaky right? And Will? I loved Will!

^I loved how much Will also loved his Grandma and thought he would have been a wonderful friend to Claudia and have helped her and vice versa to figure out ways to always celebrate Mimi. Logan, I think was a little surprised by some of the antics of the other CIT's and possibly tried to act "cool" to fit in. I really don't remember for sure. Greer from above, I like how you put that and very true.

I will have to read it again to see about Logan! Luckily, I have this one! Sent from my SM-G900P using proboards

I wouldn't mind it if Will and Claudia met up again as adults and ended up together...they're still one of my favorite Super Special pairings!
