Claudia is always described as having really intricate hairdos, with ribbons and glitter and god knows what else, yet Hodges Soileau always draws her with a sideways ponytail. Why does he do this? What is his affinity for sideways ponytails? Can anyone actually think of a book where Claudia WEARS a sideways ponytail? Can anyone think of a cover where she's not?

Probably had something to do with cranking out a painting a month; maybe he was all, I have too much work to do, I'll just sweep her hair off to the side. She always did have, like, one side in six braids, the other on top of her head and pinned with teddy bears or something. Maybe they wanted to keep it simpler on the covers.
Don't know what his excuse for the lack of Dawn's waist-length hair was, though.

I think it's just easy to draw. Much easier than Medusa braids or weird stuff like that. Hodges seemed to go for simplicity. Her outfits were never overly wacky either. But I don't see any reason why Claudia wouldn't have rocked the side ponytail once in awhile. It was so 80s.

I have to admit that I always compared the covers with the descriptions in the books, and always was a bit confused. Especially because Claudia's outfits and especially her hair really didn't look THAT weird. But I agree that it probably would have been very difficult to draw...

I don't think her hair was ever weird. I swear! Claudia made/had the most banging hair clips. Her earrings didn't sound half bad either. They should given the b*tch her own accessories line. If her clips and earrings were that good.
Yeah, I feel you on the hair thing. Claudia's hair never truely changed did it. Even though the BSCers said she did something different with it every day it was always scrapped back.

I remember them saying they don't think they've seen Claudia wear her hair the same way twice. Wow, that girl must have some imagination!

I don't think she had a sideways ponytail on the original covers of "Kristy's Great Idea" or "Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls." Hodges Soileau wasn't doing the cover art then, though. Side note: Claudia didn't even look remotely Asian on either of those covers. Hispanic, maybe, but not Asian.

I'd say because it was a commonly done hair do at the time. I do think it's a bit excessive for every cover though, for a character that was so diverse in her style/

Funny you say that, recently when I've been reading the books I've seen them say her hair was pulled to the side or in a side ponytail... ALL the time.

Sideways ponytails weren't even cute! I hate them! They were super uncomfortable too, cause your hair had to be pulled all tightly around the back of your head and God forbid a piece in the back fall out.

In some of my early school photos, I had the half up / half down side pony tail.

^Ooh my sister used to wear her hair in that. I always thought it looked cute on her, but I didn't think I could pull it off. Turns out, no one can really pull it off, but ya know it's just one of those things

IAWTC! I guess she could pass for Asian on the first Phantom Phone Calls cover, but the original Kristy's Great Idea looks like it was drawn by someone who never read the book. Stacey has red hair!
