No way. It seemed to be a rather upper class town. Even the poorer people were living pretty well. Didn't Mrs. Barrett get some sort of secretary job though? She was obivously trashy, lol.

^ Were there any poor/lower income people in Stoneybrook? It didn't seem like it.

Just Mrs. Barrett. In the movie Buddy and Suzi got into the camp for the price of one. But then she married Mr. DeWitt and moved up.

Seth is a carpenter. But he went from building bookcases to getting big jobs in other states. I think if you live in Stoneybrook long enough, you'll eventually strike it rich one way or another.

It's strange that there were no poor people in Stoneybrook. Even an idyllic town like Sweet Valley had the Martins to be the outcasts (though they seemed to disappear soon after Tricia died).

I really, really hated how they had to outsource to Stamford to find a girl to do charity work for a girl in Secret Santa. Were there any poor characters that anyone can think of who actually lived in Stoneybrook proper?

The Pikes I can't think of any poor families. The only ones who struck me as maybe-poor were the Barretts, but no one ever said that they actually were, so they were probably just on par with the rest of Stoneybrook.

In one book, I got the impression that the Barretts weren't poor. I found this weird because in all of the other books I always thought they were. Maybe another inconsistancy....

ITA The books never gave the impression that the Barretts were short of money. At least, not that I recall.

All doctors have emergency room privledges... I never got the impression that Dr. J was a regular ER doctor, she was probably just doing a consult on of her patients.
It seems that maybe Dr. J was a family practioner.

I always thought of her as a doctor who spent most of her time in an emergency room/hospital rather than one who had regular hours and an office somewhere. Wasn't she always missing things and getting sitters because she was working? (ETA: I'm not "New to Stoneybrook" anymore! )

I was always under the impression that Kristy's fam was a bit poor before Mrs. Thomas married 'ole moneybags. It is mentioned a few times how she had to go to work and struggle to provide for the family- and in Claudia's portrait book she mentions that the hotel she stayed at w/ the Thomas' wasn't all that great, and how instead of a babysitter, they had to watch David Michael.
WHat I always found weird though, is the fact that if they were so poor, how did they manage to live next to Mary Anne (lawyer dad, likely mucho casho), and across from the Kishis. It seems strange to me how they were made out to be short on cash, but still lived in that type of neighbourhood.
Hmmmm.....maybe the reason why Mrs. Thomas could barely afford a sitter for David Michael, and only on certain days, is because her mortgage payments were too high.
*amber*
ps- what, were there no apartment buildings in Stoneybrook? No 'lil ghetto townhouses?

The impression I got from Dawn's Grandad in the 5th book was that Mary Anne's Dad started small as a lawyer and worked his way up gradually over the years.

I remember it being mentioned that Elizabeth hired a sitter on certain days of the week even if one of her other children was free to watch David Michael. That sounds wasteful to me, even if sitters only charged...the BSC's rate was, what, like $2-$3 an hour? DM wasn't young enough that he needed to be watched every second -- couldn't he play by himself in his room while one of his older siblings worked on homework or something?
