I don't remember much about Claud and Alan's relationship except that I hated it because I hate him. He's like a pesky annoying fly. I don't see how it's endearing at all and I imagine he'd be just as annoying and attention-whorey as an adult.

Found another example of Alan being a pretty nice guy. In Abby’s Twin, he accidentally ran into Anna and knocked her down but then helped her up. He did make a joke about her hurting him and wondered if she was wearing “metal underwear” but since he didn’t know about her brace, this was a totally innocent statement, I think. Abby went really bezerk on him, then, which was kind of funny but I felt for him because he was obviously trying to be nice to Anna. I wonder how he and Anna would have gotten along since she seemed to treat him like a normal person instead of some big annoyance. I think more of what it is about Alan being annoying is that the girls like to make a big deal about how pesky he is. Then he tries to live up to their expectations, especially because he wants Kristy’s attention.

When Alan behaves normally, everyone says he is sooo nice and obviously not a bad guy - but being a normal, well-behaved person shouldn't be so unusual and applauded!

i absolutely love alan gray. i was rereading mary anne breaks the rules last night and cracked up during the scene where alan apparently stuck some kind of plastic hand in the cafeteria salad and then said "may i give you a hand, kristy?" come to think of it, a lot of the dialog in that book was seriously witty. i also love when he ships himself to amsterdam in a dog crate and...oh, wait.
as for stacey's secret friend, i honestly don't think alan was being as cruel as the rest of the kids. he seemed like the usual pest, coming up with stupid insults and drawings. the difference was that tess was a strange new kid with no one to back her up, unlike kristy, and the teasing got totally out of hand. it doesn't help that the poor girl had absolutely no idea what was going on. IMO, the really cruel kids in that book were the ones like clarence king and his group, which is understandable.
also, movie alan gray was such a horrible portrayal. he's just supposed to be a jerk, not a dork with suspenders.

^ I haven't watched the movie for a really long time. Alan is a dork with suspenders? That doesn't seem to fit the book's description at all. Agree about Stacey's Secret Friend. King seems to be a jerk in a lot of books, doesn't he? I know he was pretty bad to Logan in both of Logan's books. Agree, sotypical, that normal behavior should be expected not applauded. I didn't mean to praise Alan but was just pointing out an instance when he wasn't actually joking around and thinking it was kind of funny how Abby went off and Anna was like "what are you doing???" Maybe someone like Anna could bring out more of Alan's nice, serious side while Kristy brings out the teasing because he likes her so much he doesn't know how else to get her attention and thinks this is what she expects of him. I knew lots of boys that age who were like that.

I think I have to accept that I'm the only non-Alan-fan around these parts Except I know hitzpink agrees with me, but I suppose that's about it! Oh well! Oh, also, I think part of the reason I dislike him so much is because I picture him as the guy in the movie and seriously, he was soooo obnoxious in the movie (and also had a crush on Dawn which was totally random!)

^ I haven't seen the movie so hope it doesn't change my opinion of Alan. A crush on Dawn - weird. I totally can't see those two together (and am convinced he likes Kristy anyway ;D) If I knew Alan in real life, there is a good chance I would hate him but for some reason, he strikes me as funny in the books. I think it might be his relationship with Kristy or the way the other girls are always like "ew - Alan!" that I enjoy.

I don't know why Alan liked Dawn in the movie. that was NEVER mentioned in the books. I think they just needed a way to work Dawn into the storyline or something, it was ridiculous and so random!

^ i agree there. He was sooo dorky in the movie. I also don't know why in the world he was after Dawn. That NEVER happened in the books.Looks like we all agree on that.

I felt kind of sorry for him in the movie where he asks Dawn out and she's all "Get real,Alan."

^ That is pretty mean (though I can see myself doing something like that at her age - not proud of it now but....) Just read Shadow Lake and the part where Sam annoyed Stacey reminded me of Alan and how he bugs Kristy. Makes me wonder if maybe Kristy likes Alan (I'm convinced she secretly does) because of his similiarties to Sam. This sounds twisted stated like this but hopefully you know what I mean ;D (kind of like the idea that girls always end up with guys who are similar to their dads)

I'm reading European Vacation right now and enjoyed the argument between Alan and Michel. I see it as more evidence that Alan likes Kristy and think it's funny when Michal asks if she is his girlfriend and Alan gets all defensive. ;D I also had to laugh at Alan the whole time in Zoo Mystery. He is often good comic relief for me except in a few books when he seems to be the instigator of picking on people. I don't think he ever means real harm, though, and is basically goodhearted.
