This was the first ever BSC book I got or read. So it remains a favourite. I never paid attanetion to the logistics before, haha. Oh, and was anyone else surprised that 16 candles was MA's favourite movie? Isn't it a little old? Mature themes?

Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) is having the worst day of her life. Her entire family, including heartless parents, have forgotten her sixteenth birthday. Her stuck-up sister is getting married tomorrow. The hunk of her dreams, Jake Ryan (Michael Shoeffling) doesn't even know she's alive - or so she thinks - because he's going with Caroline Mulford, the shallow, beautiful Big Blond On Campus (Haviland Morris). On top of all that, a geek with delusions of coolness (Anthony Michael Hall) has the hots for her. I copied this from Amazon because I couldn't narrow it down without writing the movie out. LOL.

sixteen candles also has a very racist portrayal of a foreign exchange student and a date rape scene where the rapist is viewed as having "scored." i don't think ann actually saw the movie; she just chose something popular for ma to like. then scholastic saw that ann was clueless and told her to just make a lot of i love lucy references, because it's all she knows.

^ ;D About the I Love Lucy. Agree this does sound like something MA wouldn't be allowed to watch. Find lots of inconsistencies with what the girls can and can't watch. Thanks for the summary, Lyricalangel. Sounds good based on that but not so good based on greer's extra info. Maybe I'll have to watch it now just to see what it is ;D

^I think I try to overlook those parts in the movie like I overlook some of the stuff in the BSC books. The rest of the movie is awesome. I love Jake Ryan(such a hottie).

I love this book because it has a nice "comfortable, familiar" feeling for me, probably because it is one of the first BSC books I read. One thing I noticed today when I reread it was that Dawn and Jeff acted like they didn't know what an ice cream cone looked like. I thought that was really strange. Even if they don't eat "junk food", I can't believe that they'd never seen a "sugar cone". I'm sure they even have those in health-conscious CA. ;D

There would at least be ice cream cones for the tourists at disneyland!
Does anyone else think it's weird that Claudia wants to watch star wars?

I Love Lucy is one of my favorite shows, thanks to the BSC. Back in the day I collected all things Lucy- Barbie dolls, tin posters, videos (The Long, Long Trailer and Forever Darling are still my top favorite old movies ;D) and books which helped me a lot on my sophomore term paper that I did about Lucille Ball. I also had a crush on Desi Arnaz in the fifth grade and wanted to marry him when I grew up (too bad he was dead lol). Anyway, this book was one of the few BSC books that I actually owned (I read most of the BSC at my library) and I loved it. I was never one to read scary books, but I was engrossed in this one from the very beginning. I loved reading about Jared Mullray.

As far as Sharon being able to afford the property -- I'm willing to bet that her parents helped her out financially, and I'm sure she received some sort of settlement after the divorce.
I actually loved this book. This was probably the 4th or 5th BSC book I read, and about the time I became a Dawn fan. I loved reading about the girls being so determined to find a secret passage! The Jared plot scared me a little bit back then (I was only 9 or so). I didn't think it was really a good idea for Nicky to be allowed in the passage whenever he wanted. I mean...what would stop him from just going in Dawn's room? Also, if he tripped or got stuck somehow, that's a big liability on Sharon's part. And...yeah, I never considered the logistics of the passage until I read this thread. I just accepted the location and moved on, without thinking that Dawn was upstairs. And OF COURSE the passage ends up next to Dawn's room, as opposed to the guest room. Oh, Dawn.

^ I doubt the Pikes would have sued if something had happened to Nicky. They don't seem like that type. I never really thought of that, though. I wonder what parents in BSC land WOULD sue over something like that?
