I had looked at the cover of this one many times while I was reading it, but just realized that Claudia is wearing pink and blue safety pins as earrings. She truly has earrings for every occasion. I think there's too many cases in the books where parents ask their kids to do something, but don't force them to, which maybe just seems weird to me because of how strict my parents were. Like, in this book, Mrs. Kishi asks Claudia to not spend too much time at Russ and Peach's, but doesn't actually make her stop (she just acts annoyed when Claudia chooses to stay). My parents absolutely would have made me leave. (The weirdest example of this is in SS#4, when Mrs. Newton asks Jamie not to go on the boat trip because he's sick, but he chooses to go anyway. HE'S 4-YEARS-OLD, WHY IS THIS A MATTER OF CHOICE FOR HIM?) I looooved that they went to Philadelphia, since I grew up near there! Cheesesteaks and soft pretzels are the best foods in the world!

WTF at Jamie Newton making that decision for himself. Four-year-olds should not be making any decisions for themselves except for like, what toy to play with.

Jamie Newton is too young, to choose to go the sailing boat or not. It's his parents choice, if he should go sailing or not. Since he was sick, Mrs. newton, should put her foot down. Said to him, no you may not go sailing, maybe some other time.
I read this book once. I don't remember about this book. Another book to re-read again.

I never noticed the safety pins. I always liked her pink bowling shirt and side pony.

I think her outfit on this cover is actually pretty cute. I love the bowling shirt.

I feel like they glossed over Claudia, Stacey, Abby, and Melissa's trip to Washington Mall too much. Don't the authors realize how much the readers love reading about their trips to the mall?

Totally agreed! I love that Claudia bought a Swiss army knife.
Plus, Abby shopping?

I read this last thanks to Helen sharing Claudia's baby burping tip helped her. What really jumped out at me this time is that Claudia is the only non Russ family member who seems to have an interest in Lynn. Not once does Claud'a mom call her sister to see how Lynn is doing or (as she really should have) make sure it was okay for Claudia to be there so much. I wanted to hug Russ when he announced Lynn's birth, he came across as such a happy and thankful dad, I wish we had gotten to know him better. Love the Welcome Home, Lynn banner, so funny and when Claudia and her Dad got the film for the camera, I wished they both would remember that and want to spend more time (to our knowledge) together. I felt awful for Janine. It did seem like she was completely ignored. IIRC Russ announced Lynn's name for the first time in front of everyone including Janine. He and Peaches could have at least asked Janine first. Perhaps Janine and Claudia could have picked out a name together, that would have been very sweet to read about. I still vote for Mimi and of course Grandma Mimi to have been healthy and able to physically be there at the hospital. Mimi could have even been the baby's middle name.

I thought Russ was lovely too and would have liked to have known more about him. He struck me as the most normal Stoneybrook dad! I love his sense of humour. "Have coffee will drink".

I was thinking about this book recently because I was watching Steve Wilkos. A teen wanted to have a baby and claimed she was ready because she babysat all the time.
Claudia (and the rest of the club) strike me as the type that would become mothers thinking they know it all because their used to babysit and then completely be in over their heads

I'll add, while I think Claudia's behavior was terrible, it was in character for her, all of the sitters actually. They always say THEY know best. However, the adults were the problem until Peaches stood up to her. I know Mrs. Kishi tried saying something early on but seriously it shouldn't have taken so long for it all to come out. Especially since she had a newborn. I would've snapped after Day 2.

I was 29 when I became a mom and having my own children is far different than being a babysitter or a daycare teacher. I also minored in child development in college. Motherhood is still challenging and I don't think anything prepares anyone fully for it.

The BSC were always naivest about babies, I think. Like when MA has that egg project and tries to combine looking after her egg with caring for baby twins like the tasks are of equal priority. Or how Dawn thinks her stepmom is a bad mother/there's something wrong with her pregnancy because Carol eats ice cream and plays tennis. I'm not surprised Claudia would diagnose PPD from so little evidence.
I wouldn't be surprised if Peaches and Russ didn't have a bunch of friends, though. Peaches in particular always came off a little up and down, like how she quits her job when she's literally only a fee weeks pregnant, then complains about how she's dealing with not working. I think there was a later book where she was talking about how her old roommate Molly was going to visit, and how she feels like she's boring in comparison to her. She seems like she put a lot of expectations on motherhood being her whole life.

I'm guessing that Lynn is a Taurus because this book is set in May. Also, Claudia comments on how patient Lynn is -- which is also a Taurus trait. Taurus and Cancer (Claud's sign) are compatible signs, so I also find that interesting. It's possible that Lynn is a Gemini since it starts May 21 - June 21 (previously it was May 22 - June 21). It's also possible that Lynn was born on the cusp of Taurus and Gemini, which is May 17 - 23.

I'm assuming Lynn is a Taurus just for probability's sake. Does the book have any context other than May? Like was school still in session or did they mention Memorial Day at all?
I am a May Gemini. It adds nothing to this convo but most May babies are not Geminis so I have to represent my people.
