I came across this gem in Chapter Two:
Yow. That's pretty insulting to both Mary Anne and Richard. No wonder I think Dawn's a real jerk sometimes.

I was thinking about some of the "weird" food donated to the Zunis. Hot cocoa, imported chocolates, caviar...Dawn said the chocolates weren't practical. Well, I'd take it! I also remember Charlotte's pen pal writing that she received a leather "frinjed" vest and a bottle of chocolate syrup. When I was a kid I remember thinking, "that's all she's getting?" But thinking about it now, I'm sure she only mentioned the chocolate syrup because what kid wouldn't think that was a cool thing to get? Cans of tuna fish and green beans wouldn't be nearly as fun or worthy of mention.

^ Oh that Dawn... always thinking of what's "practical"

I thought she meant they weren't practical because they were being sent to a dry desert climate and would melt in the mail.

I bet it was nice for the Zunis to get a few not-so-normal items. If I found myself in a situation where I had to accept donated food and couldn't provide for myself, I know I'd get sick of nothing but useful food. Sometimes, a little chocolate can go a long way!

Since I read this last month, now I'm finding myself wanting to reread Sixth-grade Sleepover by Eve Bunting, which is another book with a big sleepover at an elementary school, only it has a plot, which Dawn and the Big Sleepover kind of doesn't.

Wow, this is my first time posting here in awhile!
Anyway, this was one of my favorite books when I was little. The back cover's gone and the front cover's seen better days, that's how you can tell it's a favorite heh. I really don't even know why - probably because Dawn was my favorite back then (and now, I can't stand her LOL)
I snarked this one for the bsc_snark community on LJ and one thing I didn't get was at the Rodowsky's garage sale, Mrs. Delaney and Mrs. Kilbourne are there finding things of theirs that their kids donated. This was an SES project - the Delaneys go to Stoneybrook Academy and the Kilbournes go to Stoneybrook Day School. Did David Michael rob their homes? LOL
Then again, knowing how all the kids in Stoneybrook seem to get along with each other, I wouldn't be surprised if word got around to everyone. Except the Delaneys, because the only kid who really seemed to tolerate Amanda and her $400 cat was Karen.
As for donating different items to a food drive, when I was in Girl Scouts, every year we would help sort out the Thanksgiving food drive donations at the local church. Sort everything into groups (cans of corn here, boxes of pasta here), then distribute them into boxes. And we would get unexpected items too - cake mix, cookies, I remember a bag of tortilla chips being donated LOL. I could see why she would have issues with chocolate being mailed because chances are it would melt, but who's to say someone in New Mexico wouldn't mind getting some hot chocolate mix?

Sometimes, a little chocolate can go a long way! i agree. the last couple months we've been living off sandwiches, and sometimes i would rather skip lunch than eat yet another freaking sandwich. i would love to get some free chocolate!

I'll bet Ann was inspired by that sleepover book and the Sleepover Friends series when writing this then....but from a kids view!

I just started this one again today. I'm only on the fourth page and already something made me giggle:
"He's a NATIVE AMERICAN, Adam," Mallory said, as if she'd said it a hundred times before, which was probably true. "INDIANS are from India. You should know that by now, especially after three letters."
Oooo. Subtle burrrnnn by the older sister!

Virgo, isn't the term in Canada "First Nations"?

^ Yeah! Although a lot of people use the term Natives as well. I think First Nations would be the most politically correct term
