^I can imagine it was one of those things where if she didn't act immediately she would have chickened out. Like, just rip the band-aid off already! You know it's going to hurt so do it fast.

I kind of think she was biding her time, so to speak, for awhile. Before Jeff left she may indeed have started to settle in. In the many "years" afterward, there probably were times she felt at home in Stoneybrook. I don't think she ever truly believed that CT=home for her though.

I guess what bothered me the most is how angry she was that her brother would even think to leave their mom, and then she ups and does it too. Sigh.

^That bothered me, too. Dawn jumped all over poor Jeff, when inside she was probably wanting to do the same. Also, this was the book where Sharon commented to Dawn something like, "Jeff will miss us as much as we'll miss him and as much as we all miss your father." I still would love to know what exactly Sharon meant by that. Darn Dawn for never asking or using that perfect opportunity to admit to her mother that she (D) missed their old life in CA, too.

I bet Sharon missed CA a lot. After all, she moved out there for college and didn't come back to CT to live until she was divorced at age 42 (she turned 43 in book #31, yes?). Hey, was it ever mentioned if she spent her summer breaks from college back in CT?
As far as missing Jack, there was probably a small part of her that did, at least at first. Maybe she started dating so quickly to try and put the past behind her asap!

^I would think Sharon had at least one good friend in CA and/or work colleague. Did she work in CA, do we know? I don't think she ever admitted missing CA again , did she? I always thought it odd that never did she go back for a visit for suggest a family trip with Richard and Mary Anne. Although, I could see, at least intially, (and there was no "later" thanks to them never aging) her feeling weird about the idea of her new family in a place where she once lived wirth Jack. Still...she could have gone to visit Dawn and or Jeff once. I know she and Dawn did when Jeff had his appendix out, we just never got to read about that. It would have been interesting to see her interacting with Jack.

It was implied somewhat that she missed CA in book #27, when Dawn brought back avocados for Sharon. I don't remember the exact wording of it, though.
I don't know if she ever worked in CA. Seems like most of the BSC moms didn't work outside the home until circumstances dictated otherwise - like a divorce or job loss (Mr. Pike's). Mrs. Ramsey went back because she wanted to, Mrs. Kishi always worked, and I don't know about Abby's mom because I haven't really read much from the Abby era.

^ Abby's mom probably always worked. She did work when Jonathan was still alive.

Thanks, Candykane, I'll have to check that out.
Abby's mom worked for a publishing house in NY. I think the salary from that job was why they could afford the mansion in Stoneybrook. I don't think other than Dr. Johanssen, Mrs. Pike and Mrs. Barret (part time---for both)? that any of the client moms worked, did they?

I think Ann wanted to get rid of Dawn. I don't recall the link but I remember reading somewhere that Dawn and Mal were Ann's least favourite characters.

Really? Dawn and Mallory might be Ann's least favorite characters? I know Kristy is Ann's favorite character but I have a hard time believing that any of the other BSC members are Ann's least favorite characters.

When Claud and Dawn are talking about what's in the paper before the meeting, Claud mentions there was a burlgarly on Dodds Lane. That's the name of the street Ann grew up on.

Really? Dawn and Mallory might be Ann's least favorite characters? I know Kristy is Ann's favorite character but I have a hard time believing that any of the other BSC members are Ann's least favorite characters. I've never read that anywhere, either. There was a BSC event at the Scholastic building when The Summer Before was released, and when Ann was asked what she thought the baby-sitters did when they grew up, she didn't seem really enthused about answering the question in general, but specifically didn't have much to say about Dawn and Mallory. She never wound up giving an answer for Mallory at all, and when pressed enough, finally said she thought Dawn would have stayed in California permanently. I know some people who read about it have extrapolated that to mean "Ann doesn't like Mal and Dawn," but although I don't remember the exact wording of what Ann said, I was actually there and I didn't get the vibe that she disliked Dawn and Mal. Of course, that's just my opinion. Also, in this case sarish could have been thinking of something completely different, and not of an article about that event.

I was never really too excited about this book as a kid and I won't know why. It's not that bad. Maybe because, as a guy, I wasn't that interested in the pageant stuff.
