I tried peeling a banana with my feet today. Didn't work so well. I couldn't hold the darn banana still! I wonder where in the heck Ann came up with that idea...

Haha, I love how thats the main point of this conversation! Did anyone find it funny that later Dawn would prolly be apalled at the idea of a Beauty Pagent?

^ Never considered that but you're right, especially judging by how she reacts in Starring. Doesn't she say something about beauty pagents in this one, though? I'm getting ready to reread this one. It's one of my favorites ;D

Haha, I love how thats the main point of this conversation! Did anyone find it funny that later Dawn would prolly be apalled at the idea of a Beauty Pagent? I just finished this one and was surprised that she didn't care, that Sharon was more the one who was upset at the idea of beauty pageants. I like to think that it's because Dawn just moved to SB and was trying really hard to fit in, to the point where she convinced herself that she really did believe in something she didn't. I know I've been there and done that. I may be in the minority, but I prefer it when Dawn takes a stand about things, not when she becomes a caricature of herself or some laughable California stereotype, but when she stands up for what she believes in. Early Dawn can sometimes appear to me as absent of her own "voice" or personality, like her books could have been about any of the sitters.

I agree with you dawnomite. I actually enjoy when Dawn is being what many people would call "extreme". To me it's admirable that she stands up for what she believes in at such a young age. Her enthusiasm may be annoying but I find it endearing (as I do Kristy's). I've never thought about Dawn not having a problem with the beauty pagent but I agree that later in the series she definitely would've said something and if she WAS gonna help one of the girls out, she probably would've done so in a very unconventional way and used the kid to make a point against pageants or something.

thats very true... I don't know if she was trying to impress or whatever just because she was new... I kinda got the feeling the thought the pagent would 'objectify women' didn't occur to her, lol.

^ ;D Now I'm picturing Dawn leading a parade of little girls in a picket against a pagent ;D Wouldn't someone like Mrs. Perezzioso or Mrs. Wilder just love that? ;D Is this the book where Charlotte runs off the stage because she is afraid? Kind of reminds me of how Mary Anne was scared to be in the ballet when she was little in MA's Book. Did MA talk to Char about stage fright in this one or was that another book? I'm getting ready to reread so I will probably answer my own question, though ;D

^ Yes, Charlotte did run off stage in this book. I don't remember Mary Anne talking to her about stage fright, though. Wasn't Claudia helping her with the pagent?

I thought it was Stacey but it must not have been because she was back in NYC. I remember them telling her about the pagent in Stacey's Mistake when they visit. I'm going to reread tomorrow so I guess I'll find out Anyone know what book MA talks to Char about stage fright in? Or maybe it isn't stage fright but sports because I remember them setting up a lemonade stand instead of participating. But maybe I'm totally imagining things ;D
