The "apology" note she tries writing to Kristy is one of my favourite things ever. I'm sorry you're the biggest, bossiest know-it-all in the world, but what can I do about it? Have you considered seeking professional help? Tee hee hee. LOL, I know. And there's:
DEAR STACEY, I’M REALLY, REALLY SORRY YOU CALLED ME A SHY, LITTLE BABY. I HOPE YOU’RE SORRY TOO…
MA sure had a mean side
Oh my goodness. Those notes cracks me up.

I wonder if the other parents ever thought to step in and say something? Like Kristy's mom? Surely she noticed her daughter's best friend still dressing in those dresses and pig tails. I don't know. Just seems weird. On the cover, Mary Anne is practically wearing a micro-mini. I don't see how that's considered 'little girl clothes' or even appropriate for a 12-year-old. I see, but in the books, her attire was definitely not typical for a 12 year old. That outfit seems like it would be.

Yeah, me too! In the FF series, MA's Revenge, she is meaner, though it is caused by Cokie and her father...

Ah, this is one of my favorite books about Mary Anne..looking back on it I was amazed by the fact that all it took for the fight to break out was for Claudia to be reminded that she broke a rule she reprimanded Kristy for breaking..though I am confused as to why Kristy told Mary Anne to shut up when Mary Anne didn't say anything mean to her..though when she told all of them off I was like "wow."
As for the part with Mary Anne questioning the rules, well while I don't have a problem with those outfits in general, the rules were dumb..it's especially kind of stupid how her Dad said he had to approve of all her outfits when he was the one to buy all of them. Unless he was worried about her wearing them to the wrong place. Also does anyone else kind of confused of how she says she hates pink and goes on about how babyish it is yet she has some pink stuff in her wardrobe?

Maybe she doesn't mind wearing it, but doesn't want her room decorated in it. I'm the same way I love pink but my bedspread and pillows are a pretty masculine blue and gray.

Probably because Richard bought the clothes :]
Rereading all the mean notes she wrote is so funny! Her comments are just so unlike her.

Looks kind of like a Catholic school girl uniform with a sweater and heavy tights; not at all "racy". Just re-read this one for the first time in over 20 years and I like how "sweet, yet painfully shy" she is at the beginning and what a big triumph it was for her to make a new friend on her own after being in Kristy's shadow all her life (BTW- were their friends; Mariah and Miranda ever mentioned when they all move into eighth grade? It seemed that they were really close to Kristy in seventh grade). The big fight seemed to bring out the stronger side of her but unfortunetely, she come across as increasingly more passive-aggressive in the later books.

Mariah and Miranda are mentioned in #17: Mary Anne's Bad Luck Mystery. Mary Anne says that she and Kristy don't sit with them anymore.

^ I love that they are mentioned specifically to note that they are no longer friends. Why not just let them fade away quietly?

Oh my gosh! I love this book! I like how over the course of the book you really saw Mary anne learning to stand on her own two feet. I think in hindsight it would have been better if we got to see that established more through the series but I keep in mind that originally the series was only supposed to be for books long. Otherwise it seems like every book has Maryanne kind of reverting to her old self. I think a lot of people ask questions about why mrs. Newton was so quick too forgive the girls for what they did at the party but I think that can be explained that at this point in the series continuity we still very much a thing. Keep in mind not even 2 months earlier the girls did warn mrs Newton that Jamie was playing outside. I think that is huge, again Jamie could have been hurt. I can see mrs. Newton willing to forgive and forget what the girls did 1 because of what they did with the whole Jamie situation not even 2 months prior. Also keep in mind I get the impression that mrs Newton knew at least some of the girls for a while, kristy in particular was shown to babysit Jamie in the very first book.

This one is a classic IMO I've re read it lots more than others, love identifying with Mary Anne's inner thoughts and her struggle with her dad, and finally proving herself - sweet justice! Also, love your Mallory meme pe2422. Poor Mallory :/

I didn't like that Mary Anne called Stacey's diabetes dumb, a little too mean and out-of-line (especially as Stacey hadn't been shown to go on about it, maybe a little about being from New York), but otherwise the writing and characterizations were great, indeed especially that Mary Anne enjoyed so much making a new friend and that all the sitters, although Kristy less so, wanted so much to get back together without admitting they had done wrongs. I also liked the way Richard was written, here and often later, a little strict but willing to explain himself and find common ground and compromises.
It was great that even while angry Stacey continued to put hearts on is and she seemed maybe the most regretful and wanting to get back together.
