My mom had to work a random super early shift once, so my dad had to get me ready for school. I told him I could wear my hair down, but he was all "No, I can do a ponytail". It was so loose that it slide out by the time I got to school. Then when I got home ponytail-less he grilled me about why I took it out. I don't recall him ever once touching my older sister's hair.

The thought of Richard and Mary Anne getting ready together and him braiding her hair every morning is really sweet. It is. Richard is lucky to have somebody as sweet as Mary Anne for a daughter.

Yuck, that's no fun. Your dad should have let you wear your hair loose. I hate when parents try to force their own ideas of hairstyles on their kid.

Maybe it’s just the only hairstyle Richard ever learned to do. I think his rules seemed less about being controlling and more about a) wanting to show he’s a good dad because of the custody battle and b) kind of not realizing Mary Anne was growing up. I think he is one of the more understanding parents in the series a lot of the time. Yesss, thank you, Greer! I also knew that Richard was never harsh or over-controlling. So many of the fanfictions completely miss that and instead too often depict Richard as borderline abusive.

I kind of get the impression that MA and her friends thought Richard was strict because so many of the other parents gave tons of responsibilities to their 12 year olds. lol. 12 is kind of young and things that seem unfair at that age actually aren't. I also think that some of that stemmed from the fact that MA never really spoke up about wanting to wear different clothes or to even wear her hair differently.

Jenny's shirt design looks like she threw up down the front of herself. Another poor quality one. Claudia's about to kick a beer can in the background. French Stoneybrook was rough.

The new French illustrator is really committed to the blue and yellow off-the-shoulder thing for Stacey.

They're both very pretty. That looks like Karen with Moosie/Goosie?

Conveys well the anger in the fighting and Mary Anne feeling distressed about it.

This is definitely the best of the original 4. Mary Anne is actually my favorite in the early books, tied with Dawn. She's actually pretty funny at times, like with the burglar alarms in Phantom Phone Calls and her first "apology" note to Kristy she wrote in her head.
In the Kindle version, it says she tried to reach the Prezziosos' phones and also her dad, and neither of them answered. This must be an update, since I think it was different in the original. I think they should've kept it the same and just stuck with 80s tech. Not a big deal though.
Another update: I remember Dawn mentioning having a VCR, but she just recommends watching a movie with no mention of how. I was kind of looking forward to the VCR comment and idk why. Also, when Mr. Prezzioso pays them, the text just says the both get twice the amount Mary Anne was supposed to be paid, then Dawn later says, "Gosh, this is a lot of money." Might be a smart edit actually.
Kristy comes across as very bitchy in this one. And WHAT THE HECK?! She totally ditches a club meeting to go hang out with the twins. That's so bizarre that I can't wrap my head around it. This is weirder than wearing skirts to school lol. I forgot that they took turns attending the meetings and answering the phone. Kristy was pretty awful to Mary Anne when MA had to call her for jobs. They're all pretty immature here, especially at Jamie's party, but I can't deny that it's entertaining.
