Angelica always reminded me of Rugrats and I never liked the name. Then I remembered Anjelica Huston, they must have wanted a "sophisticated" kind of name to go with the cool older girl I like when Kristy can't remember her name, and the names she comes up with get funnier and funnier...Cressida, Spartacus, etc.

I remember even Claudia does it in the car when she meets Angelica. *She* also calls her by the wrong name, and when Angelica corrects her, Claud says something along the lines of, "You can call me Claudius"

They must have been studying ancient history.

I think Kristy hated Angelica just because on the sole fact that Sarah is no longer Charlie's Girlfriend and Sarah most likely became a 'friend' of the family and of Kristy would of hated anyone who wasn't Sarah. I thought it was going to lead up to Angelica being a jerk but she actually didn't do anything jerky in the whole book that seems to be expected. I thought the order of events would go: Charlie is going to spend time with the BSC/Kids. Angelica demands he stay with her. Charlie says I"ll make it up to you. Angelica has a fit and threatens to break up. Charlie caves in. Angelica is now sabotaging the events so Charlie can spend time with her. Angelica is now breaking up with Charlie. Charlie pleads with her. Angelica stays.
She didn't even do anything villianous or horrible, until the end, but that was more like poor judgement on Charlie's part. He should of said "No, Watson wont allow anyone but me to drive" I don't think Angelica would of been mad with him. She didn't seem like she would of flown off the handle.
Also the fact that she smoked didn't seem really "Bad" It wasn't like she was smoking pot or other illegal substances. I was actually sad to see they broke up because i though she was more of the 'lesson learned' character that she and Charlie would of been more responsible or something

^ I like your assessment. I wasn't fond of Angelica, but that mostly due to her being annoying, not bad like we're supposed to think.

Also, now that I think of it, Sarah seemed like a teenage Kristy in a way. Obviously Kristy had WAY more in common with her than with Angelica.

This cover is yet another illustration where Kristy (a lefty) is wearing her glove on the wrong hand.
In the notebook pages in the back of my copy, the book's previous owner wrote:
"The perfect girl for Charlie would be me Melissa, because I am pritty."
She also wrote that she's 13-years-old, so I would have expected a slightly more mature response. She also wrote she received this book from the Easter Bunny; wouldn't have expected THAT either. (Guess I'll cross post this to the thread for notebook pages.)

I just reread this one and actually enjoyed it. Kristy seemed to be freaking out over Angelica because she missed Sarah. I also love how Kristy invited Claudia we hardly ever see them interact.

Do you think the Perkins girls disappeared after Ann stopped writing the books? Maybe that's why they're gone. Anyway, this might well be my least favourite BSC book so far. And I didn't have the best of opinions on post-Dawn books, anyway. Not that Abby was a problem - I liked her in this book. And although I don't like sports, I usually like reading about the Krushers, and Kristy books are usually really good, so this book was a total let-down for me.

Angelica always reminded me of Rugrats and I never liked the name. Then I remembered Anjelica Huston, they must have wanted a "sophisticated" kind of name to go with the cool older girl Angelica Hauston played the Grand High Witch in the movie "The Witches". Maybe they wanted her to have an evil name, taking into account a possible "Rugrats" reference? Speaking of which, does anyone else think there are too many cartoon blondes with pigtails. We've got Angelica Pickles from "Rugrats", Helga Pataki from "Hey Arnold" (both Nicktoons that push the other characters around), Dee Dee from "Dexter's Laboratory" and Bubbles from "The Powerpuff Girls" (Cartoon Network's Cartoon Cartoons, both naive curious girls who act annoying/cute).

I thought Angelica in Rugrats was chosen to contrast with her behavior--i.e., her parents always calling her "Angel" and her being a little devil. I do think that for this book, they wanted a name that was more glamorous/sophisticated/unusual for the character. I also have to say that her shoes on the cover bring me back. They look like red airwalks. Re: Perkins girls, I think Ann stopped writing about them because they got older in real life and were at an age where perhaps their friends were reading them, and they got embarrassed. Ann has posted pictures of things like their wedding showers on facebook. They are all alive and well!

Heh. Charlie rejects a Levithan Polytechnik in one of his college brochures. There's a Rhinehart School of the Arts, too, but idk if that refers to anyone at Scholastic.
'Blade' is totally a Lerangis-ism! I find it hard to believe Kristy of the gross hot lunch comparisons would be disgusted by her brother talking with his mouth full, but the "girls are bossy and boys are ~confident~" spiel fits her to a T! You go, Kristy! Four for you, Kristy!

I've always liked this one. I like that it focuses on Charlie, who hasn't actually had much depth thus far in the series. Up until now, we really didn't learn that much about him. He's very much in the background, being Kristy's chauffeur. And, tbh, mostly the one who kept the Thomas family running for so long (pretty much).
The first half sort of drags and I'm not sure why. I'm not really sure why Kristy needs an assistant for the Klinic and why they're meeting every day. And why she has no sitting jobs lined up. I also didn't see what was so bad about Angelica until the end (maybe smoking is just pure evil in BSC land), or, tbh, why Kristy was so focused on getting Charlie and Sarah back together. None of this made a lot of sense to me, so I think the first half is messy for that reason. That's something I've noticed with Lerangis- sometimes I don't really get why the character cares about something so much (Jessi's Gold Medal).
Kristy setting up the date with Charlie and Sarah- massive secondhand awkwardness omg. What was Kristy thinking?
The rest of it is strong, though. I always love when something really crazy happens in a BSC book, and this one delivers. Angelica ruins Watson's car and gets pulled over by the police (Charlie and she both get fines). It's actually pretty fun to read. I do feel bad for Kristy... it's a bummer to miss that concert. That sucks and I'd be livid with Charlie too for letting Angelica drive.
I do think that Charlie and Angelica were making mistakes that teens would realistically make, though. It's extremely stupid yes (and less than kosher because they had 13-year-old passengers), but believable. Also, I forgot that the driving age in Connecticut is 17. It's 16 in California... thought that was nationwide.
Angelica's letter at the end is awful, though, and I guess Kristy was right about her. I cannot stand how she felt superior to Charlie... hate people like that. How exactly is she super mature? And basically blaming Charlie for the accident? Not cool.
I really like Kristy and Charlie's heart to heart at the end. I think that he might be acting more like a kid now because he didn't really get to be one for so many years. I did hate that comment Kristy made earlier about him acting exactly like their father. I think it affected him and might have opened up wounds. I think maybe he doesn't really know who he is because he was never really given the opportunity, and that's why he's having trouble choosing colleges (although, tbh, many hs seniors are also stumped, so he's not alone).
Charlie is banned from driving for a month because of the incident. Who is young to drive Kristy around lol (probably Nannie).
Liked this one more than I thought. A 6.5 feels about right. It would be higher if the setup was stronger.
