Choosing Robert over her friends was awkward for Robert too. If I were him I would feel the need to say to the girls "Hey, just so you know I didn't ask her to do this." Really nobody wins but herself (and it doesn't last either). I do agree that this is where things start to turn sour for Stacey's friendships. This is where they learn that Stacey not only has someone else she would rather hang out with, but also that Stacey won't admit to having trouble balancing time when she can lie instead. You can see a lot of those white lies too in Stacey vs the BSC even though in this book she supposedly learns better.

I actually skip a few books to read Stacey VS the BSC because I never read it when I was younger.

This book was too overdone, it felt like Stacey was lying or otherwise acting very selfish almost throughout and she only felt uneasy about it early on. OK of her, though, to point out that Claudia is quite deceptive to her parents.

I haven't read a BSC book in ages and I decided to read this one as it's my summer pick! I usually go to it for the Fire Island scenes and the summer beauty! The cover isn't that bad either for a summer go-to.

This was the only Stacey book in between "Stacey and the Cheerleaders" and "Stacey vs the BSC" and you can sort of see Stacey starting to drift away from her friends and get closer to Robert. Still, I didn't like her much at all in this book. If she'd just been upfront about everything, then it probably wouldn't have turned into a disaster with everyone mad at her. It's weird, because I don't think Robert's group is really as irresponsible as Stacey becomes, but I guess they need a gradually developing story that builds up to a climatic moment when Stacey leaves the BSC by mutual agreement (she quits when Kristy fires her).

I barely remember reading this one. So I'll be doing a reread when I get a chance. Sounds like a good book though!

I feel like Mr. McGill should’ve been gay. It would’ve put a whole new twist on the series.

Adding to my last post on here...Okay, so Stacey should have been honest about everything. However, I don't think Claudia's reaction is good, either. She has a right to be mad at Stacey, but she doesn't have any right to treat her like the worst person in the world who will infect anyone if they go anywhere near her and a fairytale villain at the same time. That's exactly what she's doing. She's acting like Stacey will contaminate their other friends and there is NO SYMPATHY anywhere. My point is, Stacey could have made some more sacrifices to spend time with Claudia, and she should have said "Well, Robert's going to be around as well, so is it OK if I spend some time with him as well?" but I still don't think that's an excuse to treat Stacey like a contagious smallpox carrier. As for Kristy, Mary Anne and Shannon...well, none of them asked for Stacey's side of the story. An honest one still wouldn't show her up in a good light, but you'd think one of them would at least know that Stacey's usually a lot better than she acted here and say "Stacey, we've heard it from Claudia, and you know you've hurt her a lot. But I want to hear your side, too."

But I want to hear your side, too." Both Stacey and Claudia had poor reactions to what was going on. Stacey should have made more time for Claudia yes, but Claudia knew that Robert was there so she should have expected that Stacey would spend sometime with him. I thought Mary Anne would at least ask about how Stacey felt but no. I guess she remembered how Stacey wouldn't help her with kids way back in book 8 to flirt with Scott. I wish we got more of Shannon in this book and this would have been the opportunity to use her.

13 years old is too young to be having a boyfriend. Stacey was seeing him too much and oh no the thought of not seeing him a whole weekend is the end of the world.

Kids are exposed to gay people in real life all the time, whether they know it or not. It seems silly to make this a straights-only universe when even Ann M. Martin is gay.
That said, I don't see Ed being gay. The breakdown in the McGill marriage seemed realistic as described. The BSC dads I could see being gay are: - Jack. I like how Netflix handled this - it made it seem like a good-natured divorce and I never got the vibe that Sharon and Jack hated each other. - Logan's dad. Logan's dad was never homophobic but he was strict, wanted to toughen up his son, and was all about family values. Half the closeted people I know are like this. - Maybe Shannon's dad. He isn't a good husband and seems to hate being around his family. Maybe he got married young to prove he was straight and now he's stuck in a lie, but it's also possible he's just a distant dad.

There were not many openly gay people in my rural midwestern community when these books were written. My only exposure to gay people were the 1 cast member that they would put on each season of The Real World. I don’t want to sound like a dinosaur, but things were different in the 90s. A gay BSC character would have been a learning experience for me.

Agreed, society is way different now. I think they were on the cusp by introducing Ducky. But, at the height of BSC when there was a lot of interest in Ann as a person, she never would have hinted at being a lesbian, although I’m sure she was out in her social circle.
