The BSC members somehow made a trip to Hawaii, which should be the most awsome thing ever, seem kind of boring!
The way Jessi documented everything in her hard to read handwriting took the fun out of her trip, and of my reading about it.
Even Abby being in a commercial, and Stacey being in that crash sounded less interesting than it should.
I did like that Claudia was the one to deal with race related issues rather than the usual 'OMG Jessi's black so now everyone's racist' type thing.

^I'm probably just a poor sport, but if I was Mallory I would have had zero interest in reading Jessi's vacation book. Like Mallory needed a permanent reminder that she didn't get to go on the trip with everyone else.

^I'm probably just a poor sport, but if I was Mallory I would have had zero interest in reading Jessi's vacation book. Like Mallory needed a permanent reminder that she didn't get to go on the trip with everyone else. Ha ha, I know, right? Everyone hates being forced to look at other people's vacation photos. Reading about HOW MUCH FUN everyone had in Hawaii is just going to be salt in the wound. But knowing Mal's low self esteem, maybe she was just thrilled that the cool 13-year-olds seemed to care about her absence. I just finished reading this one. What the hell is up with the photo on page 199? It's the photo right after the BSC is reunited with Stacey after her helicopter crash. The book describes how they're THRILLED to see her. In the picture, I think Claudia, Stacey and Abby all look good - Claudia and Abby look happy, and Stacey looks weary and drained. But what the hell is up with Mary Anne, Dawn, and Jessi? Dawn and Jessi look downright pissed that Stacey survived the plane crash (though, knowing how incredibly bitchy Stacey was being in this book, maybe they were secretly disappointed that she was found). Mary Anne's arms are tightly crossed and her head is completely down with a depressed look. She looks like she's in an ad for PMS medicine. I agree with whoever said the Dawn pic on page 86 was really pretty. She looks great in that picture. I hate to say it, but Abby is growing on me. My reasons for reading the BSC are 99% for nostalgia, and Abby is simply not a part of that nostalgia. When I was young, I read only three BSC books with Abby in them (this being one of them). This is in comparison to the zillion BSC books I read before Abby's creation. Abby came along when I was feeling too old to read the books, and so when I read the three books I had that had her in them, the magic was gone. Abby hadn't been around when I really loved the BSC, when I would daydream about being an adventurous and cool 13-year-old like the BSC. For this reason, I can feel no nostalgia for her. But reading this book? I really do like her. Abby is unlike any of the other BSC members. She feels like she could be real. I loved how she told a bold faced lie about being 18 without flinching - something I can't imagine any other BSC members doing. Things like that make her feel like a real kid I could have gone to middle school with.

Like Mallory needed a permanent reminder that she didn't get to go on the trip with everyone else. I never thought of it that way, but that's totally true! I couldn't afford my school's Europe trip, and I hated that my friends would constantly talk about it. Not only was Jessi's vacation book boring, but it was just a "Haha, you couldn't go, look at everything you missed" to Mallory. Maybe she could have just got Mallory a few souvenirs and taken a human level of pictures, but that vacation book would surely make her feel bad.

Eek the pictures in this book rival the penguin one in Sea City and almost the infamous one at the end of Snowbound! Abby on Page 108....she doesn't exactly look 13. The "reunion" picture of the group with Stacey, following her helicopter crash is downright freaky. I will say that now I for sure know which is Dawn and which is Stacey in the SS drawings. (Page 199) Why the heck is Mary Anne looking down at the ground? Next to her is Claudia and Abby, both of whom resemble statues, they are propping up Stacey who looks pale and not very odd, and then, there's Jessi. Poor boy like Jessi. She looks plain fed up! As for the story, I wish a trip to Hawaii only cost $500 for 10 days all expenses paid! That World Tours, Inc., must be something special. ITA, that making the gift scrapbook for Mal was rather rude. Particularly because it sounded more like a daily running journal of every activity than a few pictures with captions. Was Kristy's trip to Hawaii with her Family ever told in a Little Sister book? I'd love to read it if it was.

^I always wanted to hear about Kristy's trip to Hawaii as well. I don't recall ever reading about it in a LS book. I do remember reading about quite a few big house trips, like when they went to Washington DC, and that tropical Island, but never Hawaii, unless of course I missed that book.

Thanks, MsStock87. I'll have to lookout for those other vacation books.

I'm on the fence with whether I would like to read Jessi's vacation book if I was Mallory because then I wouldn't have gone on the trip and I wouldn't like reading about the places they visited while, on the other hand, because I didn't go on the trip, I would like to read Jessi's book so I would know about what places to visit, the history about the place, etc., in case I would go to Hawaii.

This was probably one of my least-favourite super special books. Which is a shock because it's written by Peter Lerangis, and he's usually pretty good. For some reason, Hawaii seemed boring in this - even though I would love to visit and agree that it's a very beautiful place. However, the book just didn't grab me...

^ Maybe the reason Hawaii seemed boring was because they were mostly on Oahu and a little on Maui. Maybe if they visited other Hawaiian islands, it would've seemed more interesting.

To those that think this book is boring, do you think this book would've been more interesting if they visited the other islands?

To me, this book was both boring and weird. The best part that I wish had been better/further developed was Kristy and Mal back home in Stoneybrook. I hated that Jessi got to go but Mal didn't. If we had gotten to see a more interesting side of Jessi, that might have been one thing but we didn't. The diary to Mal was plain rude. Too bad we never saw Mal's reaction to this lovely "gift." Did we? The "weird" factor was more of a feeling, probably because I just didn't get caught up in the story.
