I can understand that. I did have a few high-school aged baby-sitters but I didn't have many baby-sitters anyways.

To the ones who object to boys baby-sitting for girls, why would that make you feel awkward or uncomfortable? I'm curious to know your reasons.
I didn't often have baby-sitters as a kid, but I was equally sat by boy and girl sitters. My cousin used to watch my sister, his sister, and I while my mom and grandma went to lunch or ran errands. And one of the neighbor boys sometimes sat for my sister and I. He was probably in high school at the time. I never felt uncomfortable.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with thirteen-year-olds baby-sitting. That was the usual age kids started baby-sitting when I was in middle school. I think that, like with anything, it depends on the thirteen-year-old. Some thirteen-year-olds are trustworthy, some are not. Some are mature and responsible, some are not. I wouldn't have a problem leaving a child with a thirteen-year-old for a couple hours. I wouldn't even have a problem with a twelve or eleven-year-old, depending on the sitter. Like Mallory and Jessi sitting for their siblings, I think that's a natural arrangement. Probably not if I had a small child, but I'd let them watch my nine-year-old while I went to the dentist.
I'd ask a boy to sit for my children, if he was responsible. Just like with a girl.

^ I agree... some people are like "Omg, no boy baby-sitters!"
Well I wouldn't want a strange girl sitting for my kids if I didn't know her like I would a strange boy. If I had any kids.
If I knew the kid, or knew someone who knew him very well, then I'd consider it... same with a girl. I myself didn't have any boy sitters... I had girl sitters, that lived in my neighborhood... but I think personally I would have loved to have had a boy sitter.

I'm not opposed to boy baby-sitters. I guess it would depend on the client and the boy. I know when I was 9, I didn't want some 13 year old boy seeing me in my PJ's or tucking me into bed. I agree that 13 is a reasonable age to baby-sit, provided the sitter is qualified. I started sitting when I was 11 and I still do it. Being such a young sitter made me feel good because parents said they felt comfortable enough to leave kids with me at that age.

In my area, middle schoolers don't baby-sit except for their own siblings. But I also don't understand the stoneybrook parent philosophy of needing a baby-sitter every time they ran an errand. I just went with my mom.

I think it's because all the parents know each other and they know that this group of 13 year old girls love to watch children for virtually no money. I also think that they know the kids love the BSC so they call and hire sitters more often then people who don't live in Stoneybrook -- that way the parents get breaks and get their shopping/doctors appointments/board meetings/ cocktail parties done, they don't have to hire a nanny, and everyone is happy. Plus they are giving these pre-teen girls somethign to do besides drugs and group sex.

I know what you mean about virtually no money! They charged less than 3 dollars an hour!

thinking about the Arnold subplots as an adult reader, it seems like most of them were stock "twin" plots, like something you'd see on a family sitcom. I know the `tape down the middle of the room' thing was done on Full House and probably other shows as well.

I know the `tape down the middle of the room' thing was done on Full House and probably other shows as well. I thought of the first episode of full house too when I read that! They never really interested me either, but I liked reading about them switching roles with Carolyn ending up at the piano lesson, and about their shopping trip with Mallory. I wanted a moon and stars sweatshirt like Carolyn.
